Chapter 4 - The Cross-Examination

The atmosphere at the Travis County Courthouse the next morning was electric. Vanessa arrived looking like a martyred saint, dressed in a flowing, pristine white maternity dress that accentuated her belly. Ethan walked proudly at her side, holding her hand, acting as her fierce protector while a swarm of local reporters and lifestyle bloggers followed their every choreographed step.
Before we entered the double doors of the courtroom, Vanessa approached me in the hallway. She smiled sweetly for the flashing cameras, tilting her head. "I really hope this hearing finally gives you the closure you so desperately need, Claire," she whispered, her eyes dancing with malicious delight, fully expecting me to lash out in anger, burst into tears, or cower in fear.
I looked her dead in the eyes, my expression a mask of absolute, chilling calm. "Oh, Vanessa," I answered softly. "It absolutely will."
For the very first time since she had invaded my kitchen in my husband's shirt, her smug smile hesitated. A flicker of genuine uncertainty passed behind her eyes, but she quickly recovered, turning back to Ethan and playing the delicate victim.
Hours later, the courtroom had settled. The judge had admonished the gallery for their laughter following Vanessa's cruel opening remarks. Vanessa was sitting on the witness stand, dabbing her dry eyes with a tissue, testifying under oath about the severe "emotional trauma and intense maternal distress" my alleged lies had caused her fragile state.
When it was Daniel’s turn to cross-examine, he stood up slowly, buttoning his suit jacket. He walked to the center of the room holding the thick manila folder.
"Ms. Carter," Daniel began, his voice echoing loudly in the quiet room. "You claim my client has spread vicious, baseless lies intended to ruin your reputation as a loyal, devoted partner to Mr. Brooks. Is that correct?"
"Yes," Vanessa sniffled delicately. "She is obsessed with destroying our happiness."
"And you consider yourself a truthful person, Ms. Carter? Someone who values honesty in your personal and public life?"
"Of course I do," she replied, lifting her chin defiantly. Ethan squeezed the wooden railing of the gallery, glaring at Daniel with absolute hatred.
Daniel nodded slowly. "Your Honor, I would like to request permission to introduce evidence directly pertaining to the plaintiff's credibility and the factual nature of the allegedly defamatory statements."
The judge granted permission. The bailiff activated the large digital monitor mounted on the courtroom wall.
Vanessa was still wearing her confident, mocking smile when Daniel opened his folder. She had absolutely no idea that the very first photograph projected onto the eighty-inch screen would be a high-definition surveillance image of her stepping into a private elevator at the Four Seasons Hotel, passionately kissing the neck of Ryan Mitchell.
A collective, horrified gasp sucked all the oxygen out of the courtroom. The reporters in the back row scrambled for their phones, their eyes wide with shock.
Vanessa’s face drained of all color, turning a sickly, translucent white. She gripped the edges of the witness stand so hard her knuckles cracked.
"Ms. Carter," Daniel asked, his voice deadly calm. "Can you please identify the man you are kissing in this photograph, taken on Thursday, October 12th—a night you testified under oath that you were attending prenatal yoga?"
Ethan Brooks shot up out of his seat in the gallery, his face flushing a violent, apoplectic red. "What the hell is this, Vanessa?!" he roared, ignoring the judge's immediate demand for order.
Daniel didn't wait for her to answer. He clicked a button on a remote, and the screen shifted to a second slide. It was a screenshot of a text message, verified by a forensic data expert. It was from Derek Collins.
