Chapter 7: The Empire Secured

When Dominic returned to Chicago that evening, Matteo gave him a full, detailed report of the incident at La Perla.
I was in the nursery of our heavily fortified estate, gently rocking Leo to sleep in a velvet armchair, when Dominic walked in. He didn't wear his usual suit jacket; his tie was loosened, his sleeves rolled up, revealing the dark ink of his tattoos. He looked exhausted from the travel, but his eyes were burning with an intensity that practically set the room on fire.
He didn't speak immediately. He walked over, kneeling beside the armchair, and gently rested his large hand over my knee. He looked at Leo, peacefully dreaming, and then he looked up at me.
"Matteo told me what you did," Dominic whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "He said you broke Vincenzo Moretti without raising your voice or lifting a finger."
"He threatened Leo," I replied softly, my hand moving to trace the strong line of Dominic's jaw. "I just reminded him of the consequences of poor investments."
Dominic let out a low, breathless laugh, shaking his head. "I have spent my entire life building an army to protect this family. And today, I realized my greatest weapon was sitting right beside me the whole time."
He leaned forward, pressing his lips to mine in a kiss that was slow, deep, and fiercely possessive. It wasn't the frantic passion of our early days; it was the anchoring, unbreakable bond of two rulers who had forged an empire together.
"Moretti is gone," Dominic murmured against my lips. "I made a few calls on the drive back. His crew packed up and fled the city three hours ago. They are utterly terrified of what you have in those files."
"Good," I smiled, running my fingers through his thick, dark hair. "Let them stay terrified."
A month later, the autumn chill swept through Chicago, painting the city in shades of amber and gold. We hosted a private christening for Leo at the historic cathedral downtown, entirely closed to the public and guarded by a small army of Russo enforcers.
The guest list was small, comprised only of Dominic’s most trusted capos, lieutenants, and political allies.
As we stood at the altar, the priest blessing our son with holy water, I looked out at the pews. Every powerful man in that room was watching us with unwavering loyalty. But I noticed something incredibly profound. When they bowed their heads in respect, they weren't just looking at Dominic anymore.
They were looking at me.
I was no longer just Dominic Russo’s wife. I was the Donna of Chicago. The woman who had bankrupted an enemy faction from a restaurant table. The architect of their financial security. I had stepped into the shadows of Dominic's world and brought my own terrifying light.
Later that evening, we stood on the balcony of our master suite, looking out over the glittering skyline of the city we controlled. Leo was asleep in his crib behind us, the house completely quiet.
Dominic wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling my back flush against his chest. I rested my hands over his, feeling the cool metal of his wedding band against my skin.
"It's beautiful tonight," I whispered, watching the headlights of cars moving like tiny stars far below.
"It belongs to you," Dominic replied, his voice a low rumble in the crisp night air. "Everything the light touches, Elena. It’s yours."
I thought back to the woman I used to be. The anxious, exhausted girl who allowed a weak man like Derek to dictate her worth. I had been terrified of the dark. Now, I ruled it.
"I don't need the city, Dominic," I smiled, turning my head slightly to press a kiss to his cheek. "I already have everything I want right here."
Dominic tightened his hold on me, resting his chin on the top of my head as we watched the city breathe. The war was won. The ghosts of the past were buried in the alleyways where they belonged. We had walked through the fire, side by side, and built an empire out of the ashes.

And as the wind howled around the estate, breaking against the impenetrable walls Dominic had built for us, I knew one undeniable truth.
We were untouchable.
