Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Slaughter

At 2:00 PM, Daniel and his father, Charles Ashford, sat in the glass-walled executive boardroom of Meridian Trust. Charles looked arrogant, complaining loudly about the rain and demanding to know why the CEO was keeping them waiting. Daniel sat in complete silence, staring blankly at his hands, entirely shattered by the morning's revelation.
The heavy double doors swung open.
I walked into the boardroom, flanked by my legal team. I was wearing a sharp, tailored ivory suit, my heels clicking methodically against the hardwood floor.
Charles Ashford stopped mid-sentence. His eyes bulged as he recognized the woman he had driven out of his home two years ago. "You?" Charles sputtered, his face turning a mottled red. "What is this? Are you an assistant here? Fetch your boss immediately!"
I didn't fetch anyone. I walked directly to the head of the massive mahogany table and sat down in the CEO’s chair.
"I am the boss, Charles," I smiled, dropping the Ashford financial ledgers onto the table with a loud crack. "I am the founder and sole owner of Meridian Trust. And you are currently sitting in my building, begging me to save you from bankruptcy."
Charles physically recoiled, sinking into his leather chair as if he had been shot.
Daniel finally looked up, his red-rimmed eyes locking onto mine. The realization hit him like a freight train. The anonymous corporate giant they had come to beg for mercy was the woman he had discarded.
"Claire," Daniel whispered, his voice cracking with absolute despair. "You built this?"
"I built an empire, Daniel," I corrected him smoothly. "While you were busy inheriting a graveyard."
I opened the file. "Let’s get down to business. Ashford Industries is carrying seventy million in toxic debt. You are proposing a merger where Meridian assumes your liabilities in exchange for thirty percent equity and a seat for Daniel on my board. Is that correct?"
"Yes," Charles stammered, entirely stripped of his usual venomous authority. "It's a very generous offer. Our brand name alone—"
"Your brand name is worthless," I interrupted sharply, my voice silencing the room. "And I have zero interest in a merger. I am not partnering with you."
May you like
I slid a single piece of paper across the table toward them.
"I am buying you out entirely. A hostile acquisition. I will assume your debts, and in exchange, I am seizing one hundred percent of the voting shares of Ashford Industries. You and Daniel will be stripped of your titles, your salaries, and your board seats, effective immediately. You will walk away with absolutely nothing."
