Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

Friday morning arrived crisp, cold, and blindingly bright.

I did not wear the soft, approachable pastel blazers Adrien always preferred. I wore a tailored, razor-sharp black Saint Laurent suit, stilettos that echoed on the marble floors like gunfire, and a slash of crimson lipstick. I looked exactly like the apex predator he had forgotten I was.

At 9:55 a.m., I stepped out of the private elevator onto the executive floor of Bennett-Cole.

The boardroom was enclosed in floor-to-ceiling smart glass. Inside, Adrien stood at the head of the massive slate table, wearing a bespoke navy suit, projecting total, charismatic control. Serena sat to his right, wearing a silk blouse and the smug, untouchable aura of a queen in waiting. To my absolute delight, Evelyn Cole was also present, sitting in the corner observer chair, sipping sparkling water, there to watch her son formally steal my empire.

The board members—five older men who had always treated me as Adrien’s quiet accessory—were looking at the legal documents in front of them.

"As you can see," Adrien was saying, his voice vibrating with manufactured sorrow, "Maya’s recent mental health crisis has rendered her incapable of fulfilling her fiduciary duties. To protect Project Ares, I am authorizing the immediate transfer of the IP to our secure offshore holding—"

I pushed the heavy glass doors open.

The silence that slammed into the room was absolute.

Adrien froze. His mouth remained open, the words dying in his throat. The confident, radiant CEO vanished instantly, replaced by a man looking at a ghost.

"Maya," Adrien choked out, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edges of the table.

Serena physically recoiled in her chair, her eyes darting to the door. Evelyn Cole spilled her sparkling water down the front of her designer dress, her jaw dropping.

"Good morning, gentlemen," I said, my voice perfectly modulated, echoing off the glass walls. I walked slowly to the opposite end of the table. I did not look at Adrien. I looked directly at the board members. "I apologize for my absence. I was dealing with a severe... pest control issue."

"Maya, you cannot be here," Adrien stammered, his panic rising, his eyes wide. "This is a closed executive session. You are currently on administrative leave."

"I am the majority shareholder and the founder of this company, Adrien," I whispered, the lethal chill in my voice freezing the air in his lungs. "I can burn this room to the ground if I choose to."

I snapped my fingers.

Marcus Vance stepped into the boardroom, carrying a thick black titanium briefcase. He was flanked by two men in dark suits who carried the unmistakable, rigid posture of federal agents.

"What is this?" Evelyn Cole shrieked from the corner, standing up, her pearls clattering against her chest. "Adrien, call security! Have her removed!"

"Security works for me, Evelyn," I said without looking at her.

Marcus Vance connected a secure tablet to the boardroom’s central projector. The massive screen behind Adrien hummed to life.

"Let's review the transfer of Project Ares, shall we?" I asked.
