Chapter 1 - The Silent Architect

For thirty days, I delivered the greatest performance of my life.
I smiled during the cake tastings. I finalized the seating chart. I let Tristan kiss my cheek in front of the Apex Biotech board of directors while he confidently presented our quarterly projections. Every time he called me his "brilliant soon-to-be wife," I thought about the words on his secret account. She still thinks the wedding is about love.
He thought the wedding was about securing his fifty-percent legal claim to my life’s work. He thought the ring on my finger was a leash. He had entirely forgotten that while he was busy perfecting his handshake and charming venture capitalists, I was the one who wrote every single line of the proprietary genetic sequencing code that made our company worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
The morning after the bar incident, I met Noah Mercer in a private, windowless conference room at his corporate law firm downtown. Tristan had spent years isolating me from Noah because Noah was the only person smart enough to see through Tristan’s charismatic, empty facade.
"I need to dismantle him," I told Noah, sliding a hard drive across the polished mahogany table. It contained screenshots of Tristan’s posts, his clandestine hotel receipts with Tessa, and, more importantly, the original founding charters of Apex Biotech.
Noah, a ruthless corporate litigator with a mind like a steel trap, scanned the documents. A slow, predatory smile spread across his face.
"Tristan is an idiot," Noah murmured, tapping the signature line on the patent agreement. "He had you sign the operational rights over to the joint LLC, but you never transferred the core intellectual property. You still personally hold the foundational patents, Zoe. You hold the kill switch."
"I know," I said, my voice cold and steady. "I want to pull the plug on his entire existence. But I don't want to do it in a boardroom. I want to do it in front of every single investor he’s been lying to."
Noah leaned back in his leather chair. "When is the wedding?"
May you like
"The twenty-third."
"Then let's get to work."
