Chapter 3 - The Five-Year Empire

Five years passed.

The suffocating, exhausted nights in that tiny apartment felt like a lifetime ago. I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of my corner office, looking out over the sprawling Chicago skyline. I was no longer a terrified, abandoned mother. I was the founder and CEO of Nova Dynamics, a multi-billion-dollar tech conglomerate that had completely revolutionized global data logistics.

My daughters, Emma and Sophie, were five years old. They were brilliant, fiercely independent, and incredibly happy. They attended the best private school in the city and lacked absolutely nothing. They didn't know the man who had abandoned them in the dark, and they never would.

My office door chimed softly.

My executive assistant, Claire, stepped into the room holding a sleek tablet. “Elena, the executives from Apex Solutions are here for the 2:00 PM acquisition meeting.”

“Thank you, Claire,” I smiled, adjusting the lapels of my tailored, emerald-green suit. “Have them wait in the main boardroom. I’ll be right there.”

Apex Solutions was a struggling, mid-tier marketing firm that Nova Dynamics was preparing to buy out for pennies on the dollar to acquire their client list. I hadn't looked closely at the executive roster of the failing company. I simply told my acquisitions team to handle the paperwork.

I walked down the glass-walled corridor, flanked by my Chief Financial Officer and two lawyers.

I pushed open the heavy oak doors of the boardroom.

Three men in cheap suits stood up from the mahogany table, pasting eager, desperate smiles onto their faces as they prepared to beg the billionaire CEO for a lucrative buyout.

The man standing in the center of the trio froze.

His eager smile instantly vanished. The color drained from his face so rapidly he looked like a corpse. His hands began to shake, his briefcase slipping from his fingers and hitting the carpet with a dull thud.

It was Daniel.

He was older, his hairline receding, deep lines of stress etched into his face. He looked absolutely miserable. He stared at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of sheer, unadulterated horror and impossible disbelief.

“Elena?” Daniel choked out, his voice cracking violently in the silent boardroom.
