Chapter 4 - The Trap of Perjury

Judge Sloan turned her furious gaze toward Blake. "Mr. Donnelly, you are an officer of the court. Are you telling me you knowingly submitted fraudulent contracts to this bench in an attempt to steal your wife's remaining assets?"
"Your Honor, my client asserts his Fifth Amendment right," Blake's attorney interrupted swiftly, physically pulling Blake back down into his chair. The lawyer was sweating profusely, realizing his own license was now on the line for submitting the forged documents.

"He can assert whatever he likes," I said, finally turning to look Blake dead in the eye. "But ten minutes ago, under oath, he and his counsel entered those documents into the official court record as legitimate. My family sat in the gallery, fully prepared to testify to my 'financial incompetence' to cover their own theft."
I had let them sit there. I had let them eat at my table, smile in my face, and walk into this courthouse believing they had outsmarted me. I gave them exactly enough rope to hang themselves on the public record.
