Chapter 3 - The Mistress’s Mistake

By Sunday morning, the atmosphere in the Whitmore estate had deteriorated from a triumphant celebration into a suffocating, paranoid nightmare. Grant had spent the entire night frantically calling his lawyers, only to discover that his credit cards were declining one by one. I had systematically canceled every secondary account attached to my name, leaving him with nothing but his modest, over-leveraged personal checking account.
Charlotte was not a woman built for poverty. She had attached herself to Grant because he represented absolute, effortless power. Watching him scramble like a cornered rat was rapidly killing her infatuation.
I continued to monitor them through the cameras. Charlotte was pacing the kitchen, aggressively chewing on her thumbnail. “Grant, you promised me this was foolproof! You said she would take a plea deal to avoid giving birth in prison! If the feds have the accounts, they have my name! The condo is leased under my name!”
“Shut up, Charlotte! Let me think!” Grant roared, throwing a crystal scotch glass against the marble backsplash. It shattered into a hundred glittering pieces, completely shattering the illusion of his composed, masterful persona.
That was Charlotte’s breaking point. She was opportunistic, but she was not stupid. She knew when a ship was sinking, and she had zero intention of going down with the captain.
While Grant was locked in the home office trying to reach his IT friend to wipe the corporate servers, Charlotte pulled a burner phone from her designer purse. She slipped out to the back patio, shivering in the brisk air, and dialed a number.
What Charlotte did not know was that my private investigator had bugged her car, her apartment, and cloned her phone SIM cards weeks ago. Every call she made on that property was routed directly through a secure server to Harper and me.
“I need to speak to the District Attorney’s office,” Charlotte whispered frantically into the phone. “I have information regarding a massive corporate embezzlement scheme at Whitmore Innovations. I want to negotiate blanket immunity in exchange for handing over the primary orchestrator.”
I sat in my hotel suite, listening to the audio feed, a cold smile touching my lips. There is no loyalty among thieves, and there is certainly no loyalty among cowards.
However, Charlotte’s grand betrayal was fatally flawed. The District Attorney’s office already had the blue envelope. They already had the IP logs, the bank transfers, and the forged signatures. They didn't need Charlotte to build a case against Grant; they already had an airtight indictment against both of them.
Two hours later, an unmarked black sedan pulled into the circular driveway of the estate. Charlotte was rushing out the front door, dragging two massive designer suitcases, trying to flee before Grant realized she was abandoning him.
Detective Price stepped out of the sedan, flashing his gold badge. “Charlotte Vale?”
Charlotte froze, her eyes wide with desperate relief. “Yes! I’m the one who called! I have the flash drives! Grant Whitmore forced me into everything, I was just a victim of his manipulation!”

Detective Price did not smile. He pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt. “Charlotte Vale, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, forgery, and grand larceny. You have the right to remain silent. I strongly suggest you use it.”
Charlotte began to scream, thrashing wildly as the detective clicked the cuffs around her wrists, shoving her forcefully into the back of the cruiser. Her cries echoed across the manicured lawn, a harsh, pathetic symphony of a woman realizing that playing the victim only works if you aren't already caught on camera holding the knife.
