Chapter 2 - The Shell Game

The seatbelt sign chimed, signaling our ascent to cruising altitude, but the turbulence in row 7 had nothing to do with the weather.

Julian’s hands were violently shaking now. Chloe was silently weeping against the window, furiously typing on her phone despite the lack of service, trying to find a way to escape a flight that had barely begun.

"What did you find?" Julian asked, his voice hollow.

I pulled out a thick stack of bank statements, highlighted in bright, fluorescent yellow.

"My attorney is a very thorough woman," I began, tracing the edge of the paper. "When I asked her to look into a divorce, she started combing through our joint accounts, the mortgage on our house, and the corporate filings for my design studio. Imagine my surprise when I found out that my studio—the business I built from the ground up for the last ten years—has a second mortgage on it."

Julian swallowed hard, sweat beading on his forehead. "Elena, I can explain that. It was a bridge loan. The market was shifting, and my investment firm needed liquid capital to cover a margin call—"

"Don't lie to me," I snapped, the sudden venom in my voice making him flinch. "You didn't use my company as collateral to save your firm. You used my company to secure a $2.4 million loan to purchase a luxury waterfront condo in Miami under a dummy LLC. An LLC you named New Horizons, which, coincidentally, is exactly what you told Chloe you were looking for."

Chloe let out a muffled sob from the window seat.

"It gets worse, Julian," I said, flipping to the next page. "Because the down payment for that loan didn't come from our savings. It came from the escrow account of one of your firm's largest clients. You transferred $800,000 of client funds into a shell account, used it to buy real estate, and planned to sell the condo, replace the client funds, and pocket the equity after the divorce."

Julian’s eyes were wide with pure terror. He knew the legal term for what he had done.

"Wire fraud," I whispered. "Embezzlement. Corporate theft. You forged my signature on the secondary mortgage documents, which adds identity theft and bank fraud to the list. If you had just cheated on me, Julian, I would have taken half of everything and walked away. But you tried to steal my business and leave me with a multi-million dollar debt."

"I was going to pay it back," he pleaded, his voice cracking. "I swear to God, Elena. The real estate market in Miami is booming. I was going to flip it, pay off your studio's loan, and no one would have ever known."

"Well, someone knows now," I smiled, leaning back in my seat. "In fact, a lot of people know now. Because while we were boarding this flight, my attorney was filing an emergency freeze on all of your assets. She also sent a very detailed, legally obligated courtesy email to the senior partners at your firm, alerting them to the missing escrow funds."

Julian lunged forward, grabbing my wrist. "Are you insane?! You’ll ruin me! If the firm finds out, I’ll go to federal prison!"

I stared at his hand until he slowly released my wrist, terrified of the ice in my eyes.

"You ruined yourself, Julian," I said softly. "I just brought the receipts."

For the remaining two hours of the flight, not a single word was spoken in row 7. Julian stared straight ahead at the seatback screen, looking like a man marching toward the gallows. Chloe kept her face turned toward the window, entirely shattered. And I sat comfortably in 7C, reading a magazine, feeling lighter than I had in years.
