Chapter 7 - The Obsidian Creditor

I did not cower inside my home. I walked out the front doors of the estate, flanked by Marcus and two armed security contractors, and stepped into the cool California morning.
The rear window of the armored SUV rolled down with a smooth, mechanical hum. Sitting in the back seat was a man who radiated centuries of untouchable, ruthless, old-world wealth. He had silver hair, cold, reptilian eyes, and wore a bespoke suit that cost more than Grant’s entire fabricated net worth.
"Good morning, Evelyn," the man purred, his voice smooth, patrician, and entirely devoid of human empathy. "I see you’ve built quite the cozy little fortress for yourself. The reformed housewife playing savior to the masses. It’s a beautiful narrative."
"Who are you, and why are you trespassing on my property?" I demanded, my voice echoing with lethal, uncompromising authority.
"My name is Julian Vance," the man sneered, his arrogant mask slipping to reveal raw, unadulterated greed. "I am the senior partner of the Obsidian Global Syndicate. Your ex-husband was a useful idiot. When you dismantled his life and handed his ledgers over to the federal government, you inadvertently seized a patent portfolio that legally belongs to my organization’s offshore trusts. Grant used my capital to build his tech firm. You burned it down, and in the process, you locked three billion dollars of my liquid assets in federal purgatory."
"I don't pay extortion," I stated coldly, crossing my arms. "And I certainly don't fund shadow syndicates. You have no leverage here, Julian."
Julian let out a dry, rattling laugh. "I don't need leverage. I have lawyers, and I have the media. By tomorrow morning, I will initiate a coordinated, multi-million-dollar smear campaign that will flood the internet with fabricated, irrefutable digital evidence that your forensic accounting firm is actually a front for international money laundering. I will bury you in so much digital dirt that the FBI will be forced to raid this beautiful estate, seize your assets, and place those three beautiful children into state custody."
The air grew heavy. This wasn't a pathetic, emotionally abusive husband trying to gaslight me. This was a true apex predator, a man who viewed human lives as acceptable collateral damage on a balance sheet.
"You have forty-eight hours to transfer the patent rights and the escrow accounts into my name," Julian stated, the tinted window slowly rolling back up. "If you refuse, I will turn your California dream into a living nightmare."

As the SUV pulled away, gravel crunching under its heavy tires, I didn't tremble. I turned to Marcus, a fierce, volcanic wrath igniting in my chest.
"He thinks he can use public opinion and federal agencies as a hostage," I whispered, my eyes blazing. "He thinks because I wear silk and host charity galas, I forgot how to fight in the absolute dark."
