Chapter 3 - The Treatment He Stole From Me

By noon, Kenneth had been transferred from surgery into a guarded recovery room.

The doctors confirmed that both he and Maya would physically recover.

I was relieved.

Not because I wanted them forgiven.

But because I wanted them alive to answer for what they had done.

Grace contacted law enforcement before sunrise.

The evidence from Kenneth’s safe suggested corporate espionage, financial fraud, forgery, coercion, and medical deception. We could no longer treat this as a private marriage crisis.

It was a criminal investigation.

At the hospital, two detectives interviewed Kenneth before he had fully regained his confidence.

He asked to see me.

Grace advised against it.

But I went.

Not alone.

She stood beside me while an officer waited near the door.

Kenneth looked smaller in the hospital bed.

His hair was unkempt. His face was pale. The man who once filled rooms with charm now looked like someone who had finally run out of excuses.

“Sabrina,” he said.

I did not sit.

“Why did you stop my treatment?”

His face changed.

For the first time, he seemed genuinely caught off guard.

“What?”

“The fertility treatment. Why did you forge my signature?”

He looked toward Grace.

“She told you?”

“I found the documents.”

Kenneth closed his eyes.

“It was complicated.”

“No,” I said. “It was a decision. Explain it.”

He stared at the ceiling.

“You were obsessed with having a baby.”

“I was trying to have a family with my husband.”

“You were distracted.”

I felt something cold spread through my chest.

“Distracted from what?”

“Your father was preparing to transfer more responsibility to you at Rollins Global. You were already questioning financial reports. You were looking too closely at things.”

“You stopped my treatment because you wanted me focused on work?”

“I needed you stable.”

“Stable?”

“You were emotional. The appointments, the hormones, the disappointment. You were becoming unpredictable.”

Grace stepped forward.

“Mr. Rollins, please understand that your statements are being documented.”

Kenneth looked at her, then back at me.

“You don’t understand the pressure I was under.”

“You sold my company’s secrets.”

“I protected us.”

“You stole from us.”

“I invested.”

“You cheated with my brother’s wife.”

His eyes hardened.

“Maya was there when you weren’t.”

The words hit me.

Not because they were true.

But because they revealed how little he understood about what he had done.

“I was working,” I said quietly. “I was working because I believed we were building a future together.”

Kenneth’s voice softened.

“Sabrina, I loved you.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

“No. You loved what you could control.”

I turned to leave.

Then he said, “Maya knew about the treatment.”

I stopped.

Grace’s hand tightened around her notebook.

I faced him slowly.

“What did you say?”

Kenneth looked away.

“She was at the clinic that day.”

The room went silent.

My stomach turned.

“Maya was there?”

“She drove me.”

“Why?”

“Because I told her I needed someone who understood me.”

I felt my hands shake.

For four years, Maya sat across from me at family dinners. She hugged me when I cried after failed treatments. She brought me flowers. She told me she was praying for me.

All that time, she knew.

I left the room before Kenneth could say another word.

In the hallway, I leaned against the wall and tried to breathe.

Grace stood beside me.

“You do not have to see Maya today.”

“Yes, I do.”

Maya was in a private recovery room, guarded by officers because her name appeared on the shell company documents.

Justin was already inside.

He stood near the window, his face unreadable.

Maya looked at me and began crying immediately.

“I’m sorry.”

I remained near the door.

“You were at the clinic.”

She covered her mouth.

“I didn’t know what he was doing at first.”

“Don’t lie to me.”

“He told me you agreed to stop treatment.”

“Did you see me sign anything?”

“No.”

“Did you hear me say I wanted to stop?”

Maya shook her head.

“Then you knew.”

She sobbed.

“I was scared.”

“Of what?”

“Kenneth said Justin’s debt could ruin us. He said if I did what he asked, he would make it disappear.”

Justin stared at her.

“You knew about the debt?”

Maya nodded.

“He told me you would lose everything.”

Justin laughed without humor.

“So you slept with him to save me?”

“I thought I was protecting us.”

“You were protecting yourself,” Justin said.

Maya looked at me again.

“I should have told you.”

“Yes,” I said.

“I wanted to. So many times.”

“But you didn’t.”

She lowered her head.

“No.”

Grace placed a document on Maya’s bed.

“This company is registered under your name. It received more than nine million dollars from Marlowe Capital and transferred funds into accounts connected to Kenneth.”

Maya stared at the document.

“I didn’t know it was that much.”

“You signed forms,” Grace said.

“Kenneth told me they were tax papers.”

“You signed documents without reading them?”

Maya looked ashamed.

“He said he would leave Sabrina. He said we would start over.”

Justin turned away.

There was nothing left to say.

But as Grace gathered her papers, Maya whispered something that stopped all of us.

“There’s another account.”

I looked back.

“What account?”

“Kenneth kept it hidden. He called it the contingency account.”

“Where?”

Maya hesitated.

“Under your father’s name.”

My father had been dead for two years.

The room went completely still.

May you like

And I realized Kenneth had not only betrayed me.

He had been preparing to destroy my family from inside it.
