Chapter 4 - The Liquidation

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone.
Caleb stared at me, his brain desperately trying and failing to process the reality of what I had just said. "What?"
"My father was Daniel Atherton," I stated coldly, leaning forward into the light. "The Atherton Trust holds the controlling shares of the Azure Meridian Resort Group. I am the sole heir. And as of my father's passing, I am the final signature required on your European expansion contract."
Nina let out a tiny, horrified gasp, instinctively stepping backward toward the door.
"No," Caleb breathed, the magnitude of his ruin finally dawning on him. "No, Mara, that's... you're a consultant... you..."
"I am the woman who was going to hand you this contract tonight as an anniversary gift," I said, flipping open the cream folder. "Instead, I arrived at the Helios suite at 4:16 PM. I found the access logs showing you gave your mistress a keycard to my room. And I took this."
I slid the 8x10 photograph I had printed directly across the table.
It showed exactly what I had seen: Caleb’s hand on Nina’s waist, her lips near his ear, the romantic anniversary banner mocking them in the reflection of the glass.
Caleb’s knees gave out. He collapsed into the leather chair opposite me, burying his face in his hands. "Mara... please. Oh my god. Please, it meant nothing. It was a mistake."
"It was a breach of contract," I corrected ruthlessly. "And as the controlling authority of this resort, I am officially denying your partnership proposal. Furthermore, I have already forwarded this photograph, the suite access logs, and a notice of your unethical conduct to the London investment board that was backing your expansion."
Caleb’s head snapped up, tears of absolute panic welling in his eyes. "You... you sent it to the board? Mara, you'll bankrupt me! The company will go under!"
"The company just went under," I decreed, standing up, the sheer gravity of my presence making Nina flinch against the wall. "Your credit line at this resort has been permanently revoked. Security is waiting outside your door. You have exactly ten minutes to pack your bags and vacate my property before the local police escort you off the island."
"Mara, I love you!" Caleb sobbed, reaching across the table in a pathetic display of desperation.
May you like
I looked down at the man who had thought I was nothing more than a quiet, gullible wife.
"You loved the illusion of your own superiority, Caleb," the queen of the Atherton empire whispered. "Now get out of my boardroom."
