Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The boardroom erupted into absolute pandemonium. Investors leaped to their feet, shouting questions. Brenda shrieked in horror, realizing her entire aristocratic life was evaporating in real-time.

Mason physically stumbled backward, knocking over a display easel. “Elizabeth, you can’t do this!” he screamed, all of his polished charm shattering into pathetic, desperate panic. “This is my family’s legacy! You knew about the trust?! You can’t take everything from me!”

“You took everything from me!” I roared, my voice finally breaking with the agony of a mother’s unending grief. The sheer volume and pain in my voice silenced the entire room. I stepped up onto the stage, forcing Mason to cower away from me. “You denied the funding for my daughter’s heart medication. You let her die in agony while you were buying a villa in Cabo for your mistress using my father’s money! You told me to stop making a scene while I carried her ashes into the cold!”

Sabrina’s eyes widened in sheer terror. She looked at Mason, then at the furious, disgusted faces of the investors around her. Realizing the money was gone and the FBI was closing in, her survival instincts kicked in. She dropped Mason’s arm, backing away toward the emergency exit. “I didn’t know! He told me the money was his! I had nothing to do with the little girl!”

She turned and sprinted out the doors, abandoning the man she claimed to love the exact second his wallet ran dry.

“Megan,” I called out, scanning the front row until I found Mason’s terrified assistant trembling in her seat.

Megan slowly stood up, tears streaming down her face.

“You stamped ‘Request Denied’ on my daughter’s life-saving medication to cover up his embezzlement,” I said softly, the ice in my voice making her sob out loud. “The federal agents are waiting for you in the lobby. I highly suggest you cooperate.”

As if on cue, the boardroom doors opened again. This time, it wasn't security. It was the FBI. Agents in dark windbreakers marched down the aisle, their badges flashing under the chandelier lights.

“Mason Ross,” the lead agent barked, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and reckless endangerment resulting in manslaughter. Put your hands behind your back.”

Mason dropped to his knees on the stage. The arrogant, untouchable billionaire was gone, replaced by a sobbing, broken coward. He looked up at me, tears streaming down his face, begging for mercy. “Elizabeth, please! She was my daughter too! I didn’t know it was that bad! Please don’t let them take me!”

I looked down at him, feeling absolutely nothing but a profound, radiant emptiness.

“You told me my obsession with her illness was making the house unbearable,” I whispered, leaning down so only he could hear me as the agents pulled his arms behind his back. “Well, Mason. Now you get to live in a very small, very quiet cell. Enjoy the silence.”

I stood tall and watched as they dragged my husband out of the boardroom in handcuffs, his sister wailing in the background as the investors desperately tried to distance themselves from the ruined family. The illusion was dead. The empire was finally, rightfully mine.
