Chapter 2 - The Boardroom Execution

Bennett House Chicago was a masterpiece of classic architecture and modern luxury. On Monday morning, the grand lobby was bustling with international guests and sharply dressed executives. For years, Michael had walked across this Italian marble floor like a king surveying his kingdom. I had always walked a few steps behind him. Today, I walked in alone, flanked by Margaret and two armed corporate security guards.

The emergency board meeting was convened in the executive suite on the fortieth floor. The twelve members of the board—mostly older men who had always treated Michael as the visionary of the company—were whispering nervously when I walked in. Michael was already sitting at the head of the long table, looking incredibly irritated.

"Claire, what is the meaning of this?" Michael demanded, standing up and buttoning his custom suit jacket. "I have three investor calls this morning. You can't just weaponize your shares to throw a temper tantrum because you're upset about Friday night."

"Sit down, Michael," I said. I did not raise my voice, but the absolute, chilling authority in my tone made two board members physically flinch.

Michael blinked, caught entirely off guard. He slowly lowered himself back into his chair. I took the seat at the opposite end of the table, placing the massive forensic audit binder perfectly in the center.

"Gentlemen," I addressed the board, ignoring my husband completely. "For twenty-four years, I have allowed Michael to operate as the public face of Bennett House Collection out of respect for our marriage. However, an independent forensic audit has just concluded that Michael has embezzled 2.4 million dollars of corporate funds to purchase real estate and luxury goods for his mistress."

The boardroom erupted into stunned, chaotic shouting. Michael’s face turned the color of ash. He lunged forward, slamming his hands on the table. "That is a lie! Those were approved corporate expenditures! You are trying to ruin me because Emma hurt your feelings!"

Margaret stepped forward, handing a copy of the audit summary to the lead director. "The documents are irrefutable. Fraudulent invoices, forged expense reports, and the illegal transfer of the deed for a two-million-dollar penthouse. Pursuant to the bylaws of the Rowe-Bennett Family Trust, the majority shareholder is invoking the morality and fraud clause."

I looked directly into the eyes of the man I had spent half my life protecting. The arrogant confidence that had defined his entire existence was shattering right in front of me.

"As the owner of fifty-two percent of the voting shares," I announced, my voice echoing in the dead-silent room, "I am terminating Michael's employment as CEO of Bennett House Collection, effective immediately. Security will escort you to the lobby. Your corporate accounts are frozen, your access is revoked, and if you attempt to contact any of these board members, we will immediately hand this binder to the district attorney."

Michael was hyperventilating. "Claire... Claire, please. You can't do this. My entire life is in this building!"

"Your life is wherever Erin is," I replied, standing up. "Security, remove him."
