Chapter 4 - The Reclamation

"I made a mistake, Silas," I whispered, leaning into his touch, feeling the dormant, ruthless part of my soul waking up for the first time in years. "I forgot who I was."
"Never again," Silas vowed, his eyes flashing with a territorial, demonic possessiveness.
He finally turned his head to look down at Owen. My husband was hyperventilating, his mind entirely broken by the realization that the "naive" woman he had married was actually the protected obsession of the most lethal man in the country.
"You didn't just steal twenty million dollars from my syndicate," Silas told Owen, his voice dropping to a lethally calm register. "You tried to put a target on the back of the only woman I have ever loved. You tried to frame my queen."
"Please," Marissa begged from the corner, choking on her own tears. "Please, we'll give it back! We'll disappear!"
"You are going to disappear," Silas agreed softly.
He snapped his fingers.
Two massive guards stepped forward, hauling Owen and Marissa off the floor by their hair and dragging them screaming out of the bedroom.
"Wait! Clara, please! I'm your cousin! Clara!" Marissa shrieked as they were pulled down the stairs.
I didn't blink. I didn't flinch. I just let the sounds of their panicked screams fade into the night as Silas's men loaded them into the waiting black SUVs. They would be stripped of every penny, their identities erased, and left to rot in one of Silas's offshore black sites.
Silas looked down at me, the brutal violence in his eyes melting into absolute worship. He shrugged off his heavy, expensive wool coat and draped it over my shoulders, shielding me from the cold air rushing in through the broken front door.
"Are you ready to come home, Clara?" he asked, offering me his arm.

I looked at the perfectly decorated bedroom, the life I had built on a foundation of lies, and the wedding ring on my finger. I pulled the ring off, dropped it onto the floor, and took the arm of the most dangerous man in Chicago.
"Yes," I answered. "Take me home."
