Chapter 1 - The Red Wax Seal

Nathan did not reach for the envelope. He stared at the crimson wax seal as if it were a venomous snake coiled on a silver platter. The cold wind whipped across the terrace, scattering snowflakes against the glass of the ballroom doors, but the chill radiating from my husband had absolutely nothing to do with the winter weather.

"I am not taking that," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a frantic, hushed whisper. He looked over his shoulder at the hundreds of Chicago’s most elite citizens mingling inside. He looked at the flashing cameras of the society press. "Richard, whatever this is, it can wait until Monday morning in my office. This is the Vanderbilt gala."

"It is indeed the Vanderbilt winter gala," I replied, stepping forward until I was standing shoulder-to-shoulder with my attorney. "Which is exactly why Richard is handing this to you now. You seem to have forgotten what the 'V' in my mother’s maiden name stands for, Nathan."

The blood drained from his face so rapidly he looked like a ghost standing in the snow.

For seven years, Nathan had operated as the managing director of the Vanderbilt-Hale Philanthropic Trust. He walked through high society acting as though he were the architect of the empire, conveniently ignoring the fact that he was merely a hired custodian of my family’s generational wealth. He thought my grief had made me weak. He thought my silence over the past eight months was the pathetic surrender of a broken wife.

He didn't realize it was the meticulous, calculated silence of a predator waiting for the perfect moment to strike.

"Take the envelope, Mr. Hale," Richard instructed, his tone entirely devoid of professional courtesy. "Or I will drop it at your feet and allow the press inside to photograph it in the snow."

Nathan’s trembling hand reached out. He broke the wax seal, pulling out a heavy, watermarked document. I watched his eyes scan the bold, black text.

Immediate Termination of Executive Authority. Complete Asset Forfeiture. Irrevocable Dissolution of Marriage.

"You're firing me?" Nathan choked out, his chest heaving as the reality of his absolute destruction began to crack his pristine facade. "You can't do this, Evelyn. The board has to vote! My name is on the operational accounts!"

"Your name was on the operational accounts until 4:00 PM this afternoon," Richard corrected him smoothly. "Before the market closed, the true board—which consists entirely of Mrs. Hale’s blood relatives—voted unanimously to sever your contract for gross fiduciary fraud. You used trust capital to finance the penthouse where your mistress currently resides. You are bankrupt, Nathan."
