Chapter 2 - The Art of the Counter-Strike

When Marcus returned from the VIP lounge, his devastatingly handsome face was arranged into a mask of pure, adoring perfection. He wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me flush against his chest, kissing my temple with the tenderness of a devoted husband. The scent of his expensive cologne, which had once made my heart flutter, now made my stomach churn with violent revulsion. I leaned into him, resting my head against his shoulder, playing the part of the exhausted, dependent wife flawlessly.
"Are you feeling alright, darling?" Marcus whispered, his thumb stroking my spine. "You look a little pale. The dizzy spells again?"
"Just a little tired," I murmured, keeping my voice intentionally fragile. "But I don't want to ruin our anniversary. I'm okay."
"You are so brave," he cooed, a sickening display of false empathy. "Just make it through the toast, Clara. Then I promise I'll take you upstairs to the suite so you can rest. I have a doctor waiting to give you something to help you sleep."
He was handing me the exact blueprint of my own execution.
"Thank you, Marcus," I whispered, looking up at him with wide, trusting eyes. "I don't know what I would do without you."
As he turned to signal the orchestra to pause for the toast, I let my hand drop to my side, casually brushing against Julian, who had moved seamlessly through the crowd to stand directly behind me. Without looking at him, I slipped a folded napkin into his large hand. Scrawled on the napkin in eyeliner were three hurried sentences: He is drugging me. Fake doctor in the penthouse suite for a psych hold. Secure the room and call the feds.
Julian didn't flinch. He didn't question me. He simply melted back into the shadows of the ballroom, a ghost operating on my command. What Marcus didn't know—what no one knew—was that Julian wasn't just a former military contractor hired to keep paparazzi away. He was an active, deep-cover FBI agent investigating a series of corporate espionage cases tied to Marcus’s offshore accounts. Julian and I had been quietly cooperating for two months, but we hadn't found the smoking gun. Tonight, Marcus had just handed it to us on a silver platter.
Marcus stepped up to the microphone, tapping his champagne glass. The ballroom fell silent.
"Family, friends, colleagues," Marcus began, his voice projecting a magnetic, effortless charm that had fooled everyone in the room, including me. "Five years ago today, I married the most extraordinary woman in the world. Clara is not just my wife; she is the visionary behind Sterling Tech. But behind every great empire is a foundation of love, sacrifice, and immense pressure."
He looked directly at me, his eyes shining with manufactured tears. The audience audibly swooned.
"Recently, Clara has been battling severe health issues," Marcus continued, playing the tragic hero to absolute perfection. "The stress of building our future has taken a toll on her beautiful mind. But I want to publicly promise you, Clara, in front of everyone we love, that I will always protect you. I will take on every burden, every corporate decision, and every heavy weight so that you can simply focus on healing. I will never let you fall."
The crowd erupted into thundering applause. Women wiped away tears. The board of directors nodded in solemn approval, fully buying into the narrative that I was a broken genius and Marcus was the noble savior stepping up to carry the company. I raised my glass, smiling through the sheer, paralyzing horror of watching my executioner receive a standing ovation.
I locked eyes with Elena across the room. She was wearing a stunning, plunging red dress, holding a glass of champagne, offering me a sweet, supportive smile. Around her neck sparkled a two-hundred-thousand-dollar diamond tennis bracelet—the exact bracelet Marcus had claimed he bought for his mother’s upcoming birthday. The absolute audacity of their betrayal ignited a fire in my blood that burned away the last remnants of the sedatives.
"To Clara," Marcus finished, raising his glass high.
"To Clara," the room echoed.
I brought the glass to my lips, pretending to take a sip, but I let the poisoned champagne spill harmlessly into the dark green fabric of my gown. I wasn't going to swallow another drop of his poison.
As the applause died down, Marcus wrapped his arm around me again, guiding me toward the private executive elevators. "Let's go upstairs, darling. You did perfectly. The doctor is waiting."

"Okay," I whispered, leaning heavily against his side, letting my legs drag slightly to simulate the onset of the heavy drugs.
The elevator doors closed, sealing us inside the mirrored carriage. Marcus didn't look at me. He stared straight ahead at the digital floor numbers ticking upward, a cold, empty smirk slowly spreading across his face. He thought he was riding an elevator to absolute power, ready to lock away the woman who had built the empire he desperately coveted. He had no idea he was walking straight into a meticulously crafted slaughterhouse.
