Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Execution

For a moment, Ryan’s brain simply refused to process the visual information it was receiving.
The woman walking down the center aisle of the boardroom looked exactly like his wife, but she carried herself like a completely different human being. She wasn't wearing invisible navy. She was wearing a blindingly crisp, tailored white power suit that cost more than Ryan’s car. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, elegant chignon. Her posture was flawless, radiating an aura of absolute, terrifying authority.
The room erupted into shocked, frantic whispers. Sandra from accounting gasped out loud, covering her mouth with both hands. Dave from operations dropped his pen, staring in wide-eyed disbelief. They recognized her instantly as the quiet, unassuming wife who had baked cupcakes for the company picnics.
Ryan leaped to his feet, his chair scraping violently against the floor. “Clare? What the hell are you doing here? Did you follow me to work? Are you insane? Security!”
Clare didn't even look at him. She walked straight past him, her heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood, and stepped up to the podium. Marian Sterling stepped back, offering Clare a deferential, respectful nod.
Clare adjusted the microphone. She looked out over the sea of fifty terrified executives, her eyes cold and unyielding.
“Good morning,” Clare said. Her voice wasn't the quiet, hesitant whisper she used at home. It was rich, powerful, and commanded absolute silence. “For those of you who do not know me in a professional capacity, my name is Clare Bennett. I am the founder and CEO of Bennett Holdings. And as of yesterday, I own this company.”
Ryan’s knees gave out. He collapsed back into his chair, the air rushing from his lungs in a wheezing gasp. His mind spun in a chaotic, frantic vortex. Bennett Holdings? The private equity giant? That was her little healthcare business? No. No, that’s impossible. It’s a trick.
“This is a joke,” Emily hissed, grabbing Ryan’s arm. “Ryan, do something! Tell them she’s crazy!”
“I... I don't...” Ryan stammered, staring at his wife in sheer horror.
Clare opened the leather portfolio Marian had placed on the podium. “When I acquired Vertex Dynamics, my initial plan was a standard corporate restructuring. However, recent events have prompted me to conduct an immediate, forensic audit of the executive expense accounts. The results were... enlightening.”
Clare looked up, her gaze locking onto Ryan like the laser sight of a sniper rifle.
“Ryan Carter,” Clare said, saying his name as if it were a disease. “Executive Vice President of Sales. Over the past twenty-four months, you have expensed over four hundred thousand dollars in company funds. You categorized these expenses as client entertainment, international travel, and luxury corporate gifts.”
Ryan began to sweat profusely. The collar of his shirt suddenly felt like a noose. “Clare, please, we can talk about this privately. This is a marital dispute!”
“This is a corporate tribunal, Mr. Carter,” Clare corrected him, her voice slicing through his panic. “You do not get to dictate the terms of your execution.”
She pulled a stack of highlighted documents from the portfolio. “Let’s review the 'client entertainment,' shall we? A week-long stay at the Four Seasons in Paris. A diamond necklace from Tiffany & Co. Private helicopter charters to Aspen. According to our forensic accountants, not a single one of these expenses was tied to a client. They were entirely utilized to fund an extramarital affair with your subordinate, Emily Parker.”
The boardroom erupted. Executives turned to stare at Ryan and Emily with absolute disgust. Emily shrank down in her chair, her face burning a violent, humiliating red.
“That is corporate embezzlement, Ryan,” Clare continued, her voice echoing mercilessly. “You used company funds to finance your mistress. You stole from the investors, you stole from the board, and ultimately, you stole from me.”
“It was a mistake!” Ryan shouted, standing up again in a desperate, pathetic attempt to save himself. “I was going to pay it back! I brought in millions in revenue for this company! You can't do this to me, Clare! I am your husband!”
“You threw your wedding ring at my feet last night, Ryan,” Clare reminded him, her expression a mask of pure ice. “You told me you were done pretending. You told me you needed an equal. Well, you finally found one. And she is currently firing you.”
Ryan opened his mouth, but no words came out.
“Ryan Carter, your employment at Vertex Dynamics is terminated, effective immediately, with cause,” Clare announced. “You will receive no severance package. Your stock options are voided due to breach of fiduciary duty. Furthermore, our legal department will be forwarding this audit to the district attorney’s office this afternoon. We will be pressing charges for felony embezzlement.”
Emily jumped up, pointing a trembling finger at Clare. “You can't do this! You’re just a bitter, jealous wife! Ryan is the only reason this company survived the last quarter!”
Clare slowly turned her gaze to Emily. Emily flinched as if she had been physically struck.
“Emily Parker,” Clare said softly, but the danger in her voice was palpable. “Director of Marketing. You knowingly accepted stolen corporate funds in the form of luxury gifts and travel. You are an accessory to fraud. Your employment is also terminated, effective immediately. Security will escort both of you out of the building. You have five minutes to empty your desks.”
Two massive, suited security guards stepped through the back doors of the boardroom and marched directly toward Ryan and Emily.

“Clare, please!” Ryan begged, tears of genuine terror welling in his eyes as a security guard grabbed his arm. “I’m sorry! I made a mistake! Don't do this! I have nothing!”
“You had everything, Ryan,” Clare said, closing the portfolio. “You just didn't know it. Take them out.”
