Chapter 4 - The Checkmate

The murmurs among the investors instantly turned into a deafening roar.

"What is she talking about, Richard?" one of the primary venture capitalists demanded, standing up. "You said the Whitaker land was secured!"

"It is!" Richard sputtered, his confident facade crumbling. He looked at Ethan. "Ethan, handle your crazy ex-wife!"

"I'm not his ex-wife yet, Richard," I corrected smoothly. "He served me the papers last night, but I haven't signed them. However, Evelyn Whitaker's will established an irrevocable trust in my name alone. It is not marital property. Ethan has zero legal claim to it."

I looked up at Ethan, who was breathing heavily, his eyes darting frantically around the room as he watched his investors whispering furiously to one another.

"You spent a decade tied to a woman with no ambition, right Ethan?" I quoted, letting the words hang in the silent room. "You said I spent my days caring for the elderly instead of building something important. Well, it turns out my lack of ambition just inherited a fifty-million-dollar estate. And your grand vision? It’s currently trespassing on my property."

"Grace, please," Victoria stammered, stepping forward, her cream dress looking suddenly very washed out. "Let's be reasonable. We are family. We can work this out."

"We aren't family, Victoria," I said coldly. "You made that perfectly clear last night."
