Chapter 4 - The Checkmate

"If you take one more step toward her, you will never walk again."
The voice didn't just fill the room; it commanded it.
Cole jumped back, visibly startled, as Julian Cross stepped out of the shadows. The sheer gravitational pull of Julian’s presence sucked the oxygen straight out of the room. He didn't look like a man; he looked like a natural disaster waiting to happen.
Cole’s attorney dropped his briefcase. His face turned the color of wet ash. "Mr... Mr. Cross?"
"Who the hell are you?" Cole demanded, trying to sound brave but failing miserably as he looked at the imposing billionaire.
"I am the man who holds the mortgage on your luxury apartment, Cole," Julian stated lethally, slipping his hands into his pockets as he stepped between my ex-husband and my bed. "I am also the majority shareholder of the investment firm you work for. And as of ten minutes ago, I am the man who terminated your employment, seized your assets, and froze every account tied to your name."
Cole physically stumbled backward, all the color draining from his face. "You... you can't do that. That's illegal!"
"I am Julian Cross," he murmured, his voice a demonic whisper that made my pulse race. "I own this city. And you just tried to steal the children of the woman I swore my entire empire to protect."
Julian didn't look back at me, but his hand reached out behind his back, resting gently against my ankle over the blankets, grounding me.
"Your lawyer has exactly ten seconds to pick up those pathetic custody papers and shred them," Julian commanded, his gray eyes locking onto Cole with a merciless promise of destruction. "Then, you are going to walk out of this hospital, and you are going to disappear from Minneapolis. If I ever see your face near Brooke or her babies again, I won't just ruin your finances, Cole. I will ruin you."
Cole looked at his attorney, but the man was already scrambling out the door, abandoning his client completely.
Trembling, utterly broken, and stripped of every ounce of power he thought he held over me, Cole backed out of the room without saying a single word.
When the door clicked shut, the terrifying monster vanished. Julian turned back to me, the ice in his eyes melting into absolute devotion. He walked to the side of my bed and gently placed his warm hand over my stomach. Right on cue, one of the triplets kicked against his palm.

Julian smiled—a real, breathtaking smile that promised a lifetime of safety.
"You aren't fighting the hurricane alone anymore, Brooke," Julian whispered. "From now on, I am the storm."
