Chapter 3 - The Atlantic Legacy Gala

The drive to Miami took less than an hour in the back of the armored, heavily tinted Mercedes-Maybach that my security team had dispatched. As we sped down the coastal highway, I stared out at the dark, crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean. In a few miles, Grant Holloway believed he was going to secure his legacy. He believed his beautiful, corporate-approved mistress was the woman who belonged beside him in the elite echelons of power.
When the Maybach pulled up to the sweeping, red-carpeted entrance of the Atlantic Legacy Gala, the scene was absolute chaos. Hundreds of paparazzi were screaming, flashes exploding like lightning strikes in the humid Miami night. The venue was a historic, palatial estate, dripping in opulence, crystal, and old money.
My lead security officer, a massive former Navy SEAL named Thorne, opened the car door. "We are ready, Ms. Bellamy."
I stepped out onto the red carpet. The moment the flashbulbs caught the glittering sapphires at my neck and the unmistakable, regal cut of the midnight-blue gown, a sudden, frantic whispering swept through the press corps. For years, the Chairwoman of Bellamy Holdings had been a ghost, a myth whispered about in Wall Street boardrooms. But the heavy gold signet ring on my finger was a beacon to anyone who knew real power.
I ignored the screaming reporters and walked smoothly into the grand foyer, flanked by Thorne and three other suited guards.
The main ballroom was a masterpiece of Gilded Age architecture, packed with billionaires, politicians, and ruthless corporate raiders. I stood on the landing of the grand mezzanine, looking down at the sea of tuxedos and designer gowns. It didn't take me long to spot him.
Grant was standing near the center of the room, holding a glass of champagne, surrounded by a circle of wealthy investors. He was in his element, laughing loudly, exuding the arrogant, magnetic charm that had initially blinded me to his cruelty. Delaney Cross was plastered to his side, her hand resting intimately on his chest in front of everyone. Mavis and Brielle were a few feet away, sipping martinis and looking incredibly smug.
From my vantage point, I could hear fragments of his conversation carrying over the string quartet.
"Harbor Crown is going to revolutionize the Miami coastline," Grant boasted to a skeptical-looking real estate developer. "We are breaking ground next month. The funding is completely secured."
"I heard Bellamy Holdings has been hesitant to sign the final commitment," the developer challenged, raising an eyebrow.
Grant laughed, a dismissive, arrogant sound. "A minor administrative delay. I have a private, closed-door meeting with the Chairwoman of Bellamy tonight. By the time this gala is over, I will have her signature on my desk. These reclusive billionaires just need to be charmed, Richard. You just have to know how to handle them."
Delaney giggled, leaning her head on his shoulder. "Grant is very persuasive when he gets a woman alone in a room."
The sheer, unadulterated audacity of his lies made my blood run cold. He was building his entire empire on a foundation of absolute deceit, gambling with money he didn't have, assuming he could manipulate the "mysterious Chairwoman" the same way he had manipulated his wife.
Evelyn Shaw materialized beside me on the balcony, looking fierce in a sharp white pantsuit. "He is insufferable," she muttered, glaring down at Grant. "He cornered me ten minutes ago, demanding to know when you would arrive. He formally requested that the introduction take place at the bottom of the main staircase so the press can photograph him shaking your hand. He wants to use your image to pump his stock prices tomorrow morning."
I looked down at the sweeping, dual marble staircase that led directly into the center of the ballroom. A massive crystal chandelier hung directly above it, illuminating every step like a Broadway stage.

"He wants a public introduction?" I asked, a dark, dangerous smile curving my crimson lips. "Then let's give him a show he will never, ever forget."
I placed my hand gracefully on the cold marble railing. "Tell the gala host to make the announcement, Evelyn. It's time."
