Chapter 3 - The Public Execution

The silence in the hospital room was deafening. Mia stood there, her mouth slightly open, waiting for her wealthy, powerful knight in shining armor to yell at the hospital staff and magically produce a black card. Instead, Daniel fell to his knees on the linoleum floor, burying his face in his hands, openly weeping.
“Daniel?” Mia asked, her voice faltering as she stepped backward. “Why are you crying? Just call the bank!”
I walked over to the foot of Noah’s bed, crossing my arms over my chest. I looked at Mia with a gaze so cold it could have frozen the sun.
“He can’t call the bank, Mia,” I said, enjoying the confusion washing over her perfectly contoured face. “Because he doesn’t have a bank account anymore. The luxury SUV you drove here in? It was repossessed an hour ago from the hospital parking lot because the corporate lease was terminated. The townhouse you live in? The eviction notice is already taped to the front door. You thought you were stealing a billionaire CEO. You actually stole a broke, unemployed fraud who was living entirely on his wife's charity.”
Mia’s eyes widened in sheer, unadulterated horror. She looked at Daniel, who was still sobbing on the floor, incapable of defending himself or protecting her.
“You’re lying,” Mia stammered, her grip tightening on Leo’s hand. “Daniel is rich! He bought me a diamond necklace last week!”
“He bought it with stolen money,” I corrected her smoothly. “And my attorneys will be coming to reclaim that necklace by tomorrow morning. I suggest you pack your bags, Mia. Because without my money to prop him up, Daniel can’t even afford to buy you a value meal, let alone pay your rent.”
Mia’s survival instincts kicked in immediately. The "deep, passionate love" she had professed for Daniel evaporated into thin air the exact second the money vanished. She didn't drop to the floor to comfort him. She didn't swear to stand by his side through thick and thin.
She looked at him with absolute disgust.
“You lied to me, you pathetic loser,” Mia hissed, her voice dripping with venom. She yanked Leo’s arm. “Come on, Leo. We’re leaving.”
She turned on her heel and stormed out of the pediatric emergency room, entirely abandoning the man who had just thrown away his entire family to comfort her.
Daniel reached out a trembling hand toward the doorway, choking on his own tears. “Mia, wait! Please!”
But she was already gone.
Two hospital security guards, alerted by the shouting, stepped into the room. “Is there a problem here, ma'am?” one of them asked, looking at Daniel sobbing on the floor.

“Yes,” I said, turning my back on my ex-husband and focusing entirely on the rhythmic beep of Noah’s heart monitor. “This man is trespassing. He is not authorized to be near my son. Please escort him off the premises immediately.”
The guards hauled Daniel to his feet. He didn't fight them. He was completely, utterly broken. As they dragged him out the double doors, he looked back at me one last time, a look of pure, devastating regret etched into his features. But I didn't offer him an ounce of pity. I pulled a chair up to my son’s bedside, wrapped my hand around Noah’s tiny, warm fingers, and began the process of rebuilding our lives from the ashes of his father’s lies.
