Chapter 4 - The Executioners Arrive

Fifteen minutes later, headlights washed across the darkness of the lakefront property.
The laughter and music on the patio abruptly stopped as three separate vehicles turned off the main road and pulled aggressively into the long gravel driveway.
A property-management security SUV.
A heavy-duty towing truck.
And a sleek, black corporate sedan.
Everyone on the patio turned, shielding their eyes from the headlights. Jason frowned, setting his whiskey glass down on the table. He turned around and saw me stepping out of the shadows, fully dressed, pulling my suitcase behind me.
“What did you do, Megan?” Jason asked, a flicker of genuine unease crossing his face.
I walked calmly to the outdoor dining table. I slid the heavy diamond wedding ring off my cold finger and placed it precisely beside his whiskey glass.
“The first thing I should’ve done years ago,” I replied.
The man stepping out of the black sedan adjusted his suit jacket and walked onto the patio carrying a thick leather folder. Jason’s mother, Linda, went completely pale. She recognized him immediately. It was Marcus, the ruthless corporate attorney who had negotiated the deal that saved their family business three years earlier.
“What is he doing here?” Linda whispered, clutching her chest.
Marcus didn't offer a polite greeting. He opened the folder.
“Mrs. Parker has terminated the weekend rental agreement, effective immediately, because unauthorized guests physically assaulted the primary contracting party on the property,” Marcus announced, his voice carrying clearly over the night air.
Ryan and Kyle stopped smiling. They suddenly looked like terrified children.
The property manager stepped forward from the SUV, flanked by two security guards. “You have exactly thirty minutes to collect your personal belongings and vacate the premises. Anyone remaining after thirty minutes will be arrested for trespassing.”

Jason stared at me, his jaw dropping in absolute disbelief. “You’re kicking out my whole family? In the middle of the night?!”
“No,” I said, my voice eerily calm as I looked around the silent, stunned patio. “You did that to yourselves.”
