Chapter 1 - The Poison in the Frame

"Play it again," Richard ordered, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "And cast it to the overhead monitor. I want everyone in this hallway to see exactly what kind of man Preston Hartwell is."
The security chief tapped a few buttons, and the large digital display screen on the wall—typically used for hospital announcements—flickered to life. The high-definition security footage from three days ago began to play. I watched myself on the screen, standing near the elevator bank. I watched Preston grab my wrist, his fingers digging into my skin with violent, terrifying force as he leaned in to threaten me about the divorce proceedings. I watched myself pull away, tears in my eyes, and hurry onto the elevator.
That was where my memory of the event ended. But the camera kept recording.
On the screen, Preston did not leave the hospital. He waited until the elevator doors closed, then walked toward a secluded alcove near the stairwell. A moment later, Savannah Reed stepped out of the shadows. My husband didn't look angry; he looked relieved. He pulled his mistress into a passionate kiss right there in the maternity ward.
But the kiss wasn't the worst part.
Savannah reached into her designer handbag and pulled out a small, unlabeled amber vial. She handed it to Preston, nodding urgently. The security camera above them was 4K resolution. As Preston held the vial up to the light to inspect it, the label was crystal clear.
Beside me, Dr. Adrian Keller let out a sharp, horrified gasp. "My God. That’s Misoprostol. It's a heavy, restricted abortifacient and labor-inducer."
The air was sucked out of the hallway. I stopped breathing. The severe cramping I had been experiencing for the past two days, the sudden waves of nausea, the exhaustion that Preston had dismissed as "typical pregnancy fatigue"—it hadn't been natural. He had been quietly slipping the crushed pills into my morning tea. He was trying to force a premature labor, hoping to trigger a devastating "medical complication" so he wouldn't have to surrender half his assets or pay child support in the divorce. When the low doses didn't work fast enough, Savannah had shown up today to finish the job with physical violence.
Preston’s face drained of all color. The polished, arrogant CEO was gone, replaced by a cornered, terrified animal. He took a step backward, holding his hands up defensively. "That... that’s doctored! That’s fake footage! She gave me vitamins!"
"Vitamins don't induce labor, Preston," Uncle Richard said, his voice lethal. He turned to the two security officers flanking him. "Lock down this wing. Call the police. I want these two monsters arrested for attempted murder."

Savannah shrieked, dropping her designer bag as a security guard grabbed her arm. "No! It was his idea! He told me he'd lose the house if she had the baby! I didn't want to do it!"
I sat on the floor, shaking violently as the pieces fell into place. The man I had spent three years loving hadn't just betrayed me—he had actively tried to destroy the innocent life growing inside me. But as I looked up at the flashing red lights of the police cruisers pulling up outside the hospital windows, I knew his reign of terror was officially over.
