Chapter 3 - The Evaluation

The mediator sat at the head of the table, pulling a silver letter opener to break the red wax seal on Dr. Mercer’s official custody evaluation report. This was the document that would dictate the future of our family—the exhaustive psychological assessment that judges rarely, if ever, deviated from.

"I have thoroughly reviewed Dr. Mercer’s findings," the mediator announced, adjusting his glasses. He did not look pleased. He did not look at me. He looked directly at Nathan.

"Mr. Davis," the mediator began, his voice completely devoid of any professional warmth. "Dr. Mercer’s report is highly critical of your recent conduct. Specifically, your calculated actions regarding the Brookfield Academy athletic banquet."

Nathan frowned, sitting forward, the silver pen slipping from his fingers. "What? It was a simple seating adjustment. I was trying to include Sabrina in my son's life."

"You violated a standing court order regarding the introduction of romantic partners, and you committed fraud by contacting the school under false pretenses," Sarah interjected sharply, her eyes flashing with predatory delight.

The mediator raised a hand to silence the room, continuing to read from the heavy stock paper. "Dr. Mercer notes that she was provided with documented, incontrovertible evidence—emails from the school administration and text messages sent directly by you—proving that you actively displaced the child's mother and subsequently manipulated your minor son. According to the psychological evaluation of Noah, he is experiencing severe, ongoing anxiety directly caused by your demands that he 'perform' happiness to benefit your legal standing."

All the color instantly vanished from Nathan’s face. He stared at the mediator, his mouth slightly open in absolute, unadulterated shock. The smug architecture of his new life was collapsing in real-time.

"Dr. Mercer concludes," the mediator read, emphasizing every single devastating word, "that Nathan Davis is actively engaging in emotional coercion and parental alienation. He is consistently prioritizing his new romantic relationship and his public image over the psychological well-being of his minor child."

Nathan whipped his head toward me, his eyes wide with a frantic, sudden panic. "You went to her? You gave the evaluator my private texts?!"

"I didn't have to fabricate a single narrative, Nathan," I replied, staring dead into his terrified eyes. "I just let you speak for yourself."

"The recommendation to the judge," the mediator finished, closing the file with a definitive, echoing snap, "is that Claire Davis be awarded sole legal custody and primary physical custody of Noah. Mr. Davis will be granted restricted, alternating weekend visitation, provided that Sabrina Cole is legally barred from being present during his parenting time for the next six months to allow the child's nervous system to stabilize."

Nathan practically leaped out of his chair, his hands slamming onto the glass table. "No! That's absurd! I'm his father! You can't legally ban my girlfriend from my own house!"

"The family court can, and they absolutely will," Sarah replied coldly, packing her briefcase. "Unless you would prefer to take this to a highly public trial, where we will subpoena Sabrina, the athletic director of Brookfield Academy, and the forensic copies of the text messages where you actively manipulated a minor child to commit perjury to a court official."

Nathan was entirely trapped. His grand, manipulative scheme had imploded spectacularly, leaving him with absolutely zero leverage. He had tried to push me to the back of the room, and instead, I had legally evicted him from the center of our son's universe.
