Chapter 4 - The Sunrise Ambush

I was sitting calmly at the massive marble kitchen island, sipping a cup of decaf tea and reading the morning paper, when Dominic walked into the room. He was fully dressed in a dark suit, his face set in a mask of solemn, fabricated grief.

Right behind him was Charles Vane, clutching a leather briefcase. Behind Charles were two large men in navy blue scrubs—private medical transport orderlies.

Dominic stopped in his tracks when he saw me. He had expected to find me in bed, disheveled, groggy, easily confused, and easy to manipulate. Instead, I looked like I was ready to address the United Nations.

"Clara," Dominic said, his voice dropping into that fake, soothing tone he used for the public. "Sweetheart, why are you dressed?"

"I have a busy morning, Dominic," I said softly, turning a page of the newspaper. "What are Charles and these gentlemen doing in our home before breakfast?"

Charles stepped forward, looking incredibly uncomfortable with my composure. "Clara, please don't be alarmed. Dominic has been very worried about you lately. We all have. Your behavior... the stress of the pregnancy... it’s taken a toll. We’ve arranged for you to spend some time at a beautiful, private wellness facility upstate. Just until the baby comes."

"A wellness facility?" I asked, feigning innocent confusion. "You mean a locked psychiatric ward, Charles? Is that what the seventy-page competency petition in your briefcase is for?"

Dominic’s face went entirely pale. The mask slipped. "How do you know about that?"

I took a slow sip of my tea. "Because, Dominic, il tuo italiano è terribile quando hai bevuto troppo." (Your Italian is terrible when you’ve had too much to drink.)

Dominic physically recoiled as if I had shot him. The color drained from his face as he realized I had understood every single word he had whispered to his mistress outside the hotel library.

"You hacked my files," he hissed, the gentle husband act completely evaporating, replaced by the vicious, cornered narcissist he truly was. He turned to the orderlies. "Take her. Now. She’s having a paranoid delusion. Sedate her if you have to."

The two large men stepped toward me. I didn't even flinch. I just smiled.

Before they could cross the kitchen, the service elevator doors at the back of the penthouse violently blew open.

Evelyn Sterling marched into my kitchen looking like an absolute god of war. She was flanked not by private orderlies, but by four heavily armed Federal Bureau of Investigation agents wearing tactical vests, alongside two uniform NYPD officers.

"Touch my client," Evelyn barked at the orderlies, her voice echoing off the marble walls, "and I will personally ensure you spend the next twenty years in federal prison for attempted kidnapping and medical fraud."

The orderlies immediately backed away, throwing their hands up in surrender.

Dominic stumbled backward, bumping into the Sub-Zero refrigerator. "What the hell is this?! Charles, do something!"

Charles Vane opened his mouth to speak, but the lead FBI agent stepped forward and flashed a badge. "Dominic Rossi, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and conspiracy to commit medical fraud. Charles Vane, you are also under arrest as a co-conspirator."

"This is insane!" Dominic screamed, his voice cracking hysterically. "She’s the crazy one! Look at her! She’s unstable! She’s making this up!"

Evelyn dropped a massive, two-hundred-page bound dossier onto the kitchen island. It hit the marble with a deafening thud. "Actually, Dominic, she’s the most competent financial auditor I’ve ever met. The SEC has already frozen your corporate accounts. The forty million you stole from the pension funds to pay for your Swiss clinic and your mistress’s penthouses has been fully documented."

Dominic looked at me, his eyes wide with a terror so pure it was intoxicating to witness. "Clara... Clara, please. We're a family. I love you. The baby..."

I stood up slowly, resting my hands on my pregnant belly. I walked around the island until I was standing inches from the man who had tried to erase my existence.

"You thought my dependence was a weapon you could use against me," I whispered coldly, looking him dead in the eyes. "You forgot that the people who sit quietly in the background are the ones who hold all the keys. Have fun in federal prison, Dominic. I hear they don't speak Italian."

I turned my back on him as the federal agents slapped the cold steel handcuffs onto his wrists. He screamed my name as they dragged him out of the penthouse, but I didn't look back. I simply picked up my teacup and finished my tea.
