Chapter 5 - Flight Air France 022

That evening, the Valentine's Day snow began to fall softly over New York.
I didn't stay in the house. I had packed a single, elegant carry-on bag before Jake even arrived.
At 8:00 p.m., I handed my passport to the gate agent at JFK’s international terminal. I walked down the jet bridge and took my seat in First Class, seat 2A.
Seat 2B, the one I had originally purchased for my husband, remained empty.
The flight attendant, a kind woman with a bright smile, offered me a glass of champagne as I settled in. "Traveling alone tonight, ma'am?" she asked politely, noticing the empty seat beside me.
"Yes," I smiled, accepting the glass. "It was a last-minute change of plans."

As the heavy aircraft pushed back from the gate and began its ascent over the glittering, freezing lights of the city, I looked out the window. I had lost a husband, a lie, and a carefully constructed illusion. But as I felt the thrust of the engines carrying me toward Paris, I realized something else.
I had gained the world.
