Chapter 4 - The Son He Left Behind

The investigation did not end that night.

It had only begun.

Julian was not taken away in handcuffs from the living room. Real consequences did not always arrive with dramatic scenes.

They arrived through evidence.

Documents.

Audits.

Lawyers.

Court orders.

Frozen accounts.

And truths that could not be shouted down.

Investigators collected copies of the financial records. Eleanor’s attorney explained the will. Julian was formally notified that he had no claim to the house and no authority over the estate.

He stood in the hallway while the investigators spoke with him.

Chloe remained near the door.

Her expression had changed completely.

She no longer looked like the woman who had stared down at me in the airport.

Now she looked frightened.

“Did you know?” she asked Julian.

He did not answer.

“Did you know your mother was sick?”

Still nothing.

“Did you know Elena was taking care of her alone?”

Julian turned away.

Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.

“You told me she was just refusing to let go.”

“She is,” he said harshly.

I looked at him.

“No, Julian. I already let go.”

He glared at me.

“You are taking everything from me.”

“No,” I said. “Your mother gave me what she chose to give.”

Then I looked at the baby in Chloe’s arms.

The child had done nothing wrong.

He did not choose Julian.

He did not choose lies.

He did not choose to be carried into a home where a grieving woman stood before an altar for the grandmother he would never know.

I spoke softly.

“Your son deserves better than this.”

Julian gave a bitter laugh.

“You do not get to talk about my son.”

“I know what it means to raise a child alone,” I said.

His face changed.

A few months before Julian left for Canada, I had been pregnant.

He knew.

He had held the ultrasound picture in his hands.

But when I lost the baby during a stressful emergency with Eleanor’s health, Julian was already gone.

He sent flowers.

A generic card.

Then silence.

He never came home.

He never held my hand.

He never asked how I was healing.

And after that, he had the audacity to stand in an airport and say Chloe gave him the son I never could.

“You do not get to use that wound against me anymore,” I said.

May you like

His eyes dropped.

For once, he had no answer.
