Chapter 2 - The Art of the Ambush

James returned from his "exhausting business trip" in London on Tuesday evening.

He walked through the front doors of our Connecticut estate wearing a tailored Tom Ford suit, carrying a bouquet of my favorite white peonies, and wearing the exhausted, loving smile of a devoted husband. The sheer, sociopathic perfection of his performance made my stomach violently churn. But I had spent eighteen years in high-stakes boardrooms; I knew how to wear a mask.

“Katie, my love,” James sighed, dropping his leather weekender bag and pulling me into a warm embrace. He kissed the top of my head, smelling faintly of ocean salt, expensive scotch, and the lingering, sickeningly sweet floral notes of Vanessa’s perfume. “London was an absolute nightmare. The investors were relentless. I missed you so much.”

“I missed you too, James,” I murmured, leaning against his chest, feeling the steady, lying beat of his heart. “You work too hard. You need a vacation.”

“Soon,” he promised, his eyes flashing with a dark, secret excitement. “In fact, the restructuring meeting this Friday should finalize the new operational budget. Once the board approves the liquid asset transfers, I promise I’ll take you somewhere beautiful. Just the two of us.”

Just the two of us. The audacity of his lies was almost poetic.

For the next three days, I played the role of the supportive, oblivious wife to absolute perfection. I made him his espresso in the mornings. I listened to his complaints about the "stressful" market trends. I even laid out his suit for the Friday board meeting. But the moment his Porsche pulled out of the driveway each morning, I was a ghost operating in the shadows.

I secretly met with Marcus and a team of elite forensic auditors in a secure, windowless conference room in downtown Manhattan. They traced every single dollar James had funneled into Riviera Strategic Holdings. But I didn't stop at the financial forensics. I needed the board of directors on my side before James even opened his mouth.

On Thursday evening, while James was supposedly at a late "strategy dinner" with his marketing team—which I knew via a private investigator was actually a rendezvous at a luxury hotel with Vanessa—I hosted a highly classified, off-the-books dinner at a private club. I invited the four most powerful, influential members of the Blackwell Meridian board. These were men and women whose personal fortunes were deeply tied to the success of the company.

Over glasses of vintage Bordeaux, I laid the unredacted financial dossiers on the table.

I showed them the leveraged properties. I showed them the Cayman shell company. I showed them the fraudulent routing numbers. The board members sat in horrified, suffocating silence as they realized their golden-boy CEO was actively orchestrating the total financial collapse of their investments.

“He is going to ask you to authorize a blind restructuring protocol tomorrow morning,” I told them, sitting at the head of the table, radiating the absolute, terrifying authority that James could only pretend to possess. “He is planning to steal your money, bankrupt the firm, and leave me to take the fall. I have the legal authority to trigger an immediate hostile reversion of his shares due to extreme fiduciary fraud, but I need a unanimous board vote of no confidence to bypass the standard thirty-day review period.”

William Vance, the oldest and most ruthless billionaire on the board, looked up from the dossier. His face was a mask of thunderous fury. He looked at me, seeing past the title of "CEO's Wife" to the brilliant, uncompromising architect standing before him.

“You have our votes, Katherine,” William stated, his voice like grinding stones. “Tear him to shreds.”
