Chapter 7: The Viper's Last Strike

Six months later, the transition of power at Vanguard Global was no longer a scandalous headline; it was a celebrated masterclass in corporate governance.
Under my leadership, our quarterly profits had skyrocketed by twenty-two percent. I had streamlined our acquisitions, cut the dead weight Alexander had hired out of nepotism, and established a ruthless, highly efficient corporate culture.
But the greatest change wasn't in the ledgers. It was in my life.
Gabriel Thorne had become a permanent, intoxicating fixture in my world. Our partnership had started as a brilliant corporate alliance, but the late nights reviewing contracts, the shared glasses of vintage scotch in my penthouse, and the undeniable, electric chemistry between us had inevitably ignited. He wasn't a boy like Alexander, intimidated by my success and desperate for validation. Gabriel was a man. He worshipped my ambition. He kissed me like I was the only breathing thing on earth, and he supported my reign with a fierce, unwavering devotion.
It was a cold November evening. The first snow of the year was falling over Manhattan, dusting the city in white.
Vanguard was hosting its annual charity gala in the grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel. It was the social event of the season, a glittering assembly of billionaires, politicians, and socialites. I stood on the grand balcony overlooking the ballroom, wearing a custom-made, plunging emerald silk gown that cascaded to the floor. Diamonds sparkled at my throat, but the most important accessory was the heavy, protective arm Gabriel had wrapped around my waist.
"You are staring, Mr. Thorne," I murmured playfully, leaning my back against his solid chest.
"I am admiring my view," Gabriel replied, his lips brushing against my temple. "The most powerful woman in New York, and she belongs entirely to me."
"I belong to myself, Gabriel," I smiled, turning my head to catch his eye.
"I know," he said, his eyes darkening with absolute reverence. "That's why I'm so honored you let me stand beside you."
The peace of the moment was abruptly shattered when my head of private security, a massive former Marine named Marcus, stepped onto the balcony. His expression was grim.
"Ms. Kensington, Mr. Thorne. Apologies for the interruption," Marcus said, keeping his voice low. "We have a situation at the service entrance. Alexander is here. And he’s not alone."
My blood turned to ice. "Alexander?"
"He’s with a woman named Chloe," Marcus continued. "The... the mistress, ma'am. They bypassed the outer perimeter using forged catering credentials. Alexander is highly agitated. He's demanding to speak with you, claiming he has documents that will destroy your family’s trust. He says if you don't meet him in the private library on the second floor, he'll go to the press waiting outside."
Gabriel’s jaw locked, a muscle ticking violently in his cheek. He stepped away from me, buttoning his tuxedo jacket. "Marcus, have three men follow me. I am going to throw him out of a window."
"No," I said sharply, grabbing Gabriel’s wrist.
Gabriel stopped, turning to look at me, his eyes burning with a protective rage. "Victoria, he is trying to extort you at your own gala. I will not allow him to breathe the same air as you."
"And if you drag him out kicking and screaming, the press will have a field day," I reasoned, my mind operating with cold, calculating precision. "He wants a scene. He wants to drag me down into the mud with him. I won't give him the satisfaction."
"Then what do you want to do?" Gabriel asked, trusting my intellect implicitly.
"I want to end him. Permanently," I said, a dark smile forming on my lips. "Marcus, escort Alexander and Chloe to the second-floor library. Lock down the corridor. No press, no guests. Gabriel... come with me."
Ten minutes later, Gabriel and I walked into the dimly lit, oak-paneled library.
Alexander was pacing the length of the Persian rug, clutching a thick manila folder. He looked even worse than he had six months ago. The arrogance was completely gone, replaced by a frantic, starving desperation. Beside him stood Chloe, the twenty-four-year-old girl who had slept in my bed. She was wearing a cheap, ill-fitting dress, looking terrified and deeply out of her depth.
When the heavy doors clicked shut behind us, Alexander spun around. His eyes widened slightly at the sight of Gabriel standing like a lethal shadow right behind me, but he forced a pathetic, trembling smirk.
"Victoria," Alexander sneered. "So glad you could make time for your husband."
"Ex-husband," I corrected smoothly, walking over to pour myself a glass of sparkling water from the side table. "You have exactly three minutes, Alexander, before I have you arrested for trespassing and extortion. Speak."
Alexander slammed the manila folder onto the desk.
"I didn't spend the last six months doing nothing!" Alexander shouted, his voice cracking. "I hired a forensic accountant. A cheap one, but a good one. I had him dig into your family's trust. The one that holds this company’s original capital. I know about the offshore accounts, Victoria. I know your father hid thirty million dollars in the Caymans to avoid the estate tax before he died!"
I took a slow sip of my water, my face a perfect, unreadable mask.
"If I take this to the SEC," Alexander threatened, his hands shaking, "you lose your CEO title. You go to federal prison. The Vanguard stock tanks. Unless... unless you give me my shares back. And a seat on the board. You owe me, Victoria!"
Gabriel let out a low, dark chuckle that chilled the room. He stepped forward, picked up the folder, and slowly flipped through the pages.
"This is fascinating, Alexander," Gabriel mused, tossing the folder back onto the desk. "Truly compelling fiction. Did you print this at a local library?"
"It's real!" Alexander shrieked.
"It's fabricated," I said, setting my glass down. "My father was a paranoid, meticulous man. He paid every cent of his estate taxes. There are no offshore accounts. Your 'forensic accountant' scammed you, Alexander. He created fake ledgers, took whatever pathetic scraps of money you had left, and handed you a fantasy."
Alexander froze, the color draining entirely from his face. "No. No, that's impossible. He showed me the routing numbers!"
"I don't care what he showed you," I walked slowly toward him, the emerald silk of my dress rustling in the quiet room. "You broke into my gala to blackmail me with fake documents. But while you were busy chasing ghosts, Alexander, I was busy looking at reality."
I snapped my fingers. Gabriel reached into the inside pocket of his tuxedo jacket and pulled out a sleek, encrypted tablet. He tapped the screen and laid it on the desk next to the folder.
"What is that?" Alexander whispered, backing away.
"During the transition, I ordered a full, zero-level audit of Vanguard’s operational funds during your tenure," I explained, my voice dropping to a lethal, freezing pitch. "I found the shell company, Alexander. The one you registered in Delaware under Chloe's name. I found the four point two million dollars you embezzled from the corporate marketing budget over three years to fund your private jets, your gambling debts, and her designer lifestyle."
Chloe let out a horrified gasp, covering her mouth. "He... he told me that company was for my fashion line!"
"He lied to you, Chloe," I didn't even look at her. I kept my eyes locked on the broken man in front of me. "He used you as a mule for a federal crime."
Alexander fell to his knees. The exact same way he had in the townhouse six months ago. But this time, there was no pleading for love. There was only the stark, horrifying realization that his life was over.
"Victoria, please," Alexander choked, tears spilling down his cheeks, pooling on the expensive rug. "They'll put me in a federal penitentiary. I won't survive. I'll do anything. I'll sign anything. Just don't give that tablet to the authorities."
I looked down at him. The man who had humiliated me, who had thought I was too soft to fight back, was begging for his freedom at my feet.
"Gabriel," I said softly.
"Yes, my Queen?" Gabriel answered, stepping up right behind me, his hand resting possessively on my waist.
"Call the FBI," I ordered, my eyes never leaving Alexander's horrified face. "Tell them we have a confession for grand larceny and corporate embezzlement. And have Marcus hold him here until the agents arrive."
"No! God, no! Victoria!" Alexander screamed, scrambling forward, trying to grab the hem of my dress.
Gabriel’s foot slammed down onto the floor, mere inches from Alexander’s hand, halting him instantly. The violent, unspoken threat in Gabriel's posture was enough to make Alexander recoil in absolute terror.
I turned my back on the weeping, ruined man. I didn't say another word to him. I walked out of the library, leaving the ashes of his existence behind closed doors.
When Gabriel and I stepped back out into the glittering light of the grand balcony, the orchestra was playing a sweeping, romantic waltz. The air was crisp, the city sparkling below us.
Gabriel pulled me into his arms, resting his forehead against mine.
"You are the most terrifying, magnificent creature I have ever met," Gabriel whispered, his eyes dark with an all-consuming devotion.
May you like
"I told you," I smiled, wrapping my arms around his neck. "I don't get mad, Gabriel. I get everything."
He kissed me, a deep, passionate promise in the falling snow, and I knew the war was finally, truly over.
