Chapter 3 - The Insurance Fraud

Piper’s two friends slowly lowered their phones.

The live stream was already out of control.

Piper looked at me, her eyes wide with genuine panic.

“You had no right to look at my medical records,” she cried.

I smiled.

“When you steal someone’s identity to use their premium health insurance, they receive the Explanation of Benefits.”

Piper flinched.

“You didn’t just steal my address, Piper,” I continued quietly. “You committed federal insurance fraud.”

I gestured toward the back of the ballroom.

Two men in dark suits had been standing near the exit since eight o’clock.

They weren't private security.

They were detectives with the NYPD financial crimes unit.

Piper followed my gaze.

The color drained completely from her face.

“No,” she whispered.

“You wanted to speak woman to woman,” I said, turning off the microphone. “Well, woman to woman? You should have paid out of pocket.”

The detectives walked down the center aisle.

Piper tried to reach for Charles.

Charles physically recoiled from her, desperate to distance himself from the woman carrying his child.

Grant just stood there, paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of the betrayal.

His father had used him.

His mistress had played him.

And his wife had just executed them all.
