Chapter 4 - The Man Who Thought She Had Nothing

Andrew came to Escalante Capital three days later.
He was not allowed into the executive floor.
He waited in the lobby for nearly an hour before I agreed to meet him in a private conference room.
Not alone.
Arturo sat at one end of the table.
My divorce attorney, Sofia Reyes, sat at the other.
Andrew entered looking unlike the man who stood over me in the mansion.
His tie was crooked.
His eyes were red.
The confidence he wore like armor had fallen away.
“Mariana,” he said.
I did not stand.
“What do you want?”
He looked at the attorneys.
“Can we speak privately?”
“No.”
He swallowed.
“I am sorry.”
I waited.
“I was angry.”
I waited.
“Brenda manipulated me.”
I waited.
“My mother pushed me too far.”
Finally, he looked directly at me.
“I made mistakes.”
I leaned back in my chair.
“You slapped me.”
His eyes lowered.
“You forced me to beg for forgiveness for something I did not do.”
“I know.”
“You planned to accuse me of theft.”
“I know.”
“You told Brenda I had no money, no reputation, and no one important.”
Andrew flinched.
I looked at him calmly.
“And the worst part is that you believed it.”
He covered his face with both hands.
“I thought you needed me.”
“No,” I said. “You needed me.”
He looked up.
For the first time, he did not deny it.
The company he inherited had been collapsing.
The investors he bragged about had been ready to walk away.
The loans that kept the mansion, staff payroll, construction projects, and social image intact all traced back to the trust I controlled.
But I had never used that truth to make Andrew feel small.
I wanted him to love me without fearing me.
Instead, he treated my kindness like proof that I had no power.
“I loved you,” he said.
The sentence should have mattered.
It did not.
“You loved the person who made your life easier,” I replied. “You did not love me enough to protect me when your family decided to hurt me.”
Andrew’s shoulders collapsed.
“What happens now?”
Sofia opened a folder.
“Now, you sign the divorce and financial-separation agreement.”
“And the company?”
Arturo answered.
“The company will remain operational under independent management. The Escalante Trust will convert its debt into controlling ownership, protect the employees, and sell nonessential assets.”
Andrew looked at me.
“You are taking everything.”
May you like
I shook my head.
“No. I am saving what you were willing to destroy.”
