Chapter 14 - The Broadcast of Ruin

The Biltmore Hotel was a masterpiece of Art Deco opulence. On Saturday night, the grand ballroom was packed with the political and financial elite of the state. Cameras flashed as news anchors covered the highly anticipated re-election speech of Senator Harrison Vance.

Daniel and I walked through the gilded doors, looking like we owned the building.

I wore a sweeping, backless gown of blood-red silk. The color of a warning. Daniel was immaculate in a black tuxedo, walking beside me with the terrifying, silent grace of a panther. We blended perfectly into the sea of predators.

Across the room, Brooklyn Harrington caught my eye. She was wearing a stunning, glittering silver dress. She gave me a subtle, knowing wink.

I scanned the room and spotted our target. Greg Thorne, the campaign manager, was standing near the audiovisual booth at the side of the stage. He had a sleek, black tablet resting on a cocktail table beside him—the master control for the gala's presentations.

"You ready?" Daniel murmured, handing me a small, modified USB drive provided by our cybersecurity team.

"Always," I said.

I walked slowly toward the stage. As I closed the distance, Brooklyn initiated the distraction.

She walked directly up to the largest donor in the room—a notorious, hot-tempered real estate mogul—and very deliberately, very dramatically, poured her entire glass of red wine down the front of his white tuxedo shirt.

"Oh, I am so sorry!" Brooklyn shrieked, her voice cutting through the ambient noise, drawing the attention of every security guard and staff member in a fifty-foot radius.

Greg Thorne cursed, stepping away from the audiovisual booth to manage the sudden VIP crisis.

He left the tablet on the table.

I didn't run. I glided smoothly to the table, slipped the USB drive into the tablet's port, and typed the rapid, six-key sequence our tech team had given me.

Cloning complete.

I pulled the drive out, slipped it into my clutch, and vanished back into the crowd just as Thorne returned to the booth.

I met Daniel near the exit doors. I handed him the drive. He plugged it into a concealed, encrypted laptop in his briefcase, immediately transmitting the cloned files to the FBI's public corruption task force, bypassing local authorities entirely.

"The transfer is complete," Daniel whispered, his eyes blazing with absolute victory. "The feds have everything. The bribes, the offshore accounts, the coercion."

"Good," I smiled. "Now, let's give the Senator his introduction."

The lights in the ballroom dimmed. A hush fell over the crowd as Senator Harrison Vance strode onto the stage, beaming a perfectly manicured, utterly fake smile. He stepped up to the podium, adjusting the microphone.

"My friends," Harrison boomed, his voice echoing through the massive speakers. "We are here tonight to celebrate family. To celebrate integrity. To celebrate the law!"

Before he could continue, I used my phone to trigger the override sequence on the cloned AV network.

The massive digital screens behind Harrison Vance went completely black.

Then, a document appeared on the sixty-foot screens. It was a high-resolution image of the federal protective order I had filed for Evelyn Vance, complete with the detailed, horrific allegations of his abuse.

The crowd gasped in unison.

Harrison turned around, his smile freezing as he saw his deepest, darkest secrets broadcast to his entire donor base. "Turn that off!" he shouted into the microphone. "Cut the feed!"

The image shifted. It displayed the offshore wire transfers from Apex Citadel, explicitly detailing millions of dollars in illegal bribes accepted by his campaign.

"This is a cyber attack!" Greg Thorne screamed, frantically tapping his tablet, entirely locked out of the system.

The news cameras at the back of the room were rolling, broadcasting the unmitigated disaster live across the state.

I stood at the back of the room, leaning against the heavy doors, watching the untouchable man completely shatter.

Suddenly, the main doors of the ballroom burst open.

A dozen federal agents from the FBI Public Corruption Unit marched down the center aisle, their badges flashing in the dim light.

"Senator Harrison Vance," the lead agent announced, his voice carrying absolute, inescapable doom. "You are under arrest for federal extortion, campaign finance fraud, and witness intimidation. Step away from the podium."

Harrison stumbled backward, the color draining from his face as the agents swarmed the stage and slapped handcuffs onto his wrists. The golden boy of state politics was reduced to a pathetic, shivering criminal in front of a thousand cameras.

Daniel wrapped his arm securely around my waist.

"You didn't just ruin his career," Daniel whispered, awe lacing his tone. "You obliterated his entire existence."

May you like

"I told him," I replied softly, my eyes locking onto the ruined Senator as he was dragged away. "I am not afraid of the dark anymore."
