Chapter 3 - The Arrival

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the massive front windows of the Hidden Hills estate less than five minutes later.

When the heavy oak door swung open, two uniformed officers stepped into the foyer. They didn't need to ask who the victim was. I was standing in the center of the room, my dress soaked in hot sauce and my own blood, surrounded by shattered porcelain.

"She tripped," Genesis blurted out instantly, stepping in front of her son like a human shield. "She was reaching for the wine and she lost her balance. My son tried to catch her!"

The older officer looked at Genesis, then looked at the broken plate on the floor, the splatter pattern on the wall, and the perfectly set table.

"Ma'am," the officer said dryly. "People who trip don't usually have shattered ceramics embedded in their hair." He turned to Jackson. "Turn around and put your hands behind your back."

"You can't do this!" Jackson shouted, struggling as the officer forcefully spun him around and slapped the cold steel cuffs onto his wrists. "This is my house! I know the mayor! I'll have your badge!"

"It's actually your parents' house, Jackson," I corrected him calmly as the paramedics walked in to tend to my head. "And as of tomorrow, you won't even have that."

Genesis gasped. "What are you talking about?"

Before I could answer, the front door opened again. But it wasn't another police officer.
