Chapter 4 - The Corporate Autopsy

Rachel let out a strangled, high-pitched noise from the hallway. One of the officers immediately stepped outside to block her exit.

Mark turned to me, the color draining from his face so fast he looked like a corpse. "Diane... what is he talking about? A private investigator?"

"I’ve known for seven months, Mark," I said, my voice eerily calm. I crossed my arms, looking at the man I had spent sixteen years with. "I know about the missing funds. I know about the shell companies in Delaware. I know about the 'vendor payments' you and Rachel have been authorizing, and I know that you planned to use that proxy to drain the remaining capital reserve tomorrow morning and board a flight to the Cayman Islands."

"Diane, listen to me," Mark pleaded, his hands shaking as he took a desperate step toward me. The arrogant mastermind from the hallway was gone, replaced by a terrified, cornered animal. "It's a misunderstanding. The funds were investments! I was trying to grow the company for us!"

"There is no us," I stated flatly.

Robert pulled a thick stack of stapled documents from his briefcase and dropped them onto the medical cot.

"And there is no company for you to steal," Robert added with a shark-like smile. "Because on Tuesday afternoon, Diane legally restructured Whitaker Logistics. All voting shares, assets, and capital reserves were transferred into an irrevocable blind trust. The proxy you tried to have her sign tonight? It’s a worthless piece of paper. You have zero equity, Mark. You are officially unemployed."
