Chapter 2 - The Foundation

For eighteen years, Grant had told the story of Whitmore Development Group so many times that he had actually begun to believe his own fiction.
He told the press he was a self-made man. He told his investors he had built the empire from the ground up. He told Sienna that his wife was merely a domestic accessory—a woman who picked out tile and planned charity dinners.
He had conveniently forgotten the truth.
Eighteen years ago, Grant had been a charismatic but broke real estate agent. It was Claire’s inheritance from her late grandfather that had provided the initial seed money. It was Claire who had designed their first three properties, skipping sleep to draft blueprints while Grant took clients to expensive dinners.
To protect her investment, Claire’s lawyer had structured the holding company with a silent but absolute safeguard: a 51% voting block held exclusively in Claire’s name. Grant had laughed it off at the time, calling it a formality. Over the years, as his ego inflated, he simply forgot it existed.

Claire had not forgotten.
While Grant spent the last eighteen months practicing how to live without seeing his wife, Claire had spent those eighteen months quietly cataloging every misstep he made. She tracked the suspicious offshore wire transfers. She noted the “consulting fees” paid to Sienna Blake’s private LLC. She compiled the evidence with the clinical detachment of a surgeon preparing to amputate a necrotic limb.
