Chapter 1 - The Offshore Secret

“What trust account?” Grant repeated, his voice dangerously low.

The ocean breeze suddenly felt like ice. Vanessa stopped looking at me and stared at the man she had been sleeping with for over a year.

“The Aegis Trust,” I said calmly, keeping my hand protectively over my seven-month-pregnant stomach. “Registered in the Cayman Islands. The one you’ve been funneling Bennett family assets into for the past eighteen months. You’ve siphoned nearly thirty million dollars of my family’s money under the guise of ‘overseas logistics expansions.’”

Grant’s face turned the color of wet ash. The charming, calculated mask of the perfect CEO dissolved, revealing the cornered, desperate thief underneath.

Vanessa’s jaw dropped. She looked at Grant, her eyes wide with sudden panic. “Grant? You told me your wealth was independent. You said the money was already yours.”

“Shut up, Vanessa,” Grant snapped, entirely abandoning his gentle, affectionate tone. He took a step toward me, the beige folder forgotten on the table. “You have no proof of that, Emma. You’re being paranoid and hysterical. It’s the pregnancy hormones.”

“I’m the Chief Financial Officer of the Bennett-Ashford Group, Grant,” I replied, my voice perfectly steady. “I don’t have hormones when it comes to accounting. I have forensic auditors. And they found everything.”

I looked over at the black phone mounted near the bar.

“That’s what this was all about, wasn’t it?” I asked, gesturing toward the camera. “You knew the audit was closing in. You brought me out here, miles offshore, to provoke me. You set up that phone to record my reaction to these insulting divorce papers. You wanted a video of me screaming, crying, acting ‘unstable’ and ‘hysterical.’ You wanted to use it in court to challenge my competency and seize total control of the company before the embezzlement was exposed.”

Grant stared at me, his chest heaving. He had planned a psychological trap, a masterclass in gaslighting. He hadn’t realized that I had already read the blueprints to his entire illusion.

“Sign the papers, Emma,” Grant ordered, his voice dropping into a lethal, terrifying register. “Sign the waiver, and you can keep the house and a generous allowance. If you don’t, I will bury you in litigation until you and that baby have absolutely nothing.”

“I’m not signing anything, Grant. My lawyers are already preparing the injunction.” I picked up my purse. “Take us back to the marina. Now.”
