Chapter 5 - The Sterling Rebirth

The remaining guests in the ballroom were absolutely terrified. Fifty millionaires and billionaires stood in stunned silence, waiting to see what the Sterling brothers would do to them.

Noah stepped to the center of the room. “The doors will be unlocked in exactly five minutes. You are all free to go. But let me make one thing perfectly clear. If I hear a single whisper in this city that disrespects my sister—if any of you try to protect Arthur Vance, or fund his legal defense—my brothers and I will look into your closets next. And I promise you, we will find your skeletons.”

The guests nodded frantically. They couldn't get out of the estate fast enough. When the doors unlocked, they practically ran to their cars, leaving the shattered ballroom behind.

Once the room was empty, the heavy, suffocating tension finally broke. I looked around the destroyed room, the broken glass, the abandoned champagne flutes, and finally, I let out a long, shaky breath.

Leo walked over and wrapped his arms around me in a fierce, protective hug. “You did good, Flo. You were so brave.”

I finally let the tears fall, burying my face in my brother’s shoulder. I wasn't crying out of fear, or out of pain. I was crying because for the first time in five years, I was truly free.

The aftermath was exactly as brutal as my brothers had promised. The next morning, the federal authorities raided Vance Construction. Arthur Vance was indicted on seventy-two counts of wire fraud and embezzlement. Wendy, stripped of her wealth and social standing, was forced to move into a tiny, rundown apartment on the outskirts of the city.

Isaac’s fate was the most poetic. With no money, a ruined reputation, and pending charges for assault and battery against me, he was completely abandoned. The high-society friends he had prized so highly refused to take his calls. He eventually took a job doing manual labor for a construction company he used to own, spending his days covered in dirt, finally learning exactly what his “place” in the world truly was.

As for me, I didn't just survive; I thrived.

With the Vance estate entirely in my name, I sold the massive mansion and used the capital to launch my own philanthropic foundation, dedicated to helping women escape abusive marriages. I took my maiden name back. Flora Sterling was no longer the quiet, obedient wife of an arrogant heir. I was a powerhouse in my own right, backed by five brothers who would burn the world down to keep me safe.

Six months later, I stood on the balcony of my new penthouse overlooking the city skyline. The sky was painted in brilliant strokes of gold and violet. I held a glass of vintage champagne, not to celebrate a birthday, but to celebrate a rebirth.

Noah stepped onto the balcony, handing me a file folder. “The final divorce papers went through today. Isaac signed them from a holding cell. It’s over, Flora.”

I took the folder, didn't even open it, and tossed it into the small fire pit blazing on the terrace. We watched the paper curl, turn black, and turn to ash, carried away by the evening wind.

I took a sip of my champagne, smiling as the city lights flickered to life below me. The Vance empire had crumbled to dust, but the Sterling legacy had only just begun.
