Chapter 7: The Conscious Choice

The silence in the living room was suffocating.

I closed the front door and locked the deadbolt. Jonas was already on his phone, quietly ordering a perimeter check of the neighborhood. Elias had gone back to his blocks, entirely unaware that a bomb had just been dropped in the middle of his living room.

I walked over to the window, staring out at the street. My chest was tight, my breathing shallow. The old rage was boiling up, hot and familiar.

Call the team. Have Madison picked up. Break her until she hands over the documents. Burn the evidence.

The thoughts fired rapidly, the ruthless CEO taking over the reformed father. I reached into my pocket for my phone. I had the numbers. I knew the people who could make a parolee disappear without a trace. It would be so easy. I could protect Elena and Elias. I could fix this.

"Arthur."

Elena’s voice cut through the dark fog in my head.

I turned around. She was standing in the center of the room, her arms crossed, watching me with a terrifyingly calm expression.

"I know that look," Elena said quietly. "I recognize the math you are doing in your head right now. You are calculating how much it will cost to make her disappear."

I swallowed hard, my grip tightening on my phone. "She threatened our son, Elena. She threatened to put you in federal prison. I can't let her do that."

"I didn't say we let her do it," Elena replied, taking a step toward me. "I am asking how you plan to stop her."

I looked at the floor. "The old way."

"The old way is exactly what Victor wants," Elena said, her voice firm but not angry. "Think about it, Arthur. Madison is desperate, but she isn't smart enough to orchestrate a blind trust. Victor is pulling the strings from inside his cell. He knows that if you resort to illegal intimidation to silence Madison, you violate your federal agreement. You go to prison. He takes you down with him."

I looked up at her, realizing the brilliance of her deduction. She was right. It was a trap.

"If I don't silence her, and she goes to the DA, they will freeze your clinic's assets. They will drag you into an interrogation room," I argued, the panic bleeding into my voice. "I promised I would protect you. I promised I wouldn't let my past touch you again."

Elena walked right up to me. She didn't look at me like I was a monster. She looked at me like I was a partner.

"You promised you would let me choose," she corrected softly. She reached out and placed her hand over mine, the one clutching the phone. "So let me choose."

"What is your choice?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

"We do exactly what Damian did," Elena said, her eyes flashing with a fierce, unbreakable light. "We don't hide the truth. We weaponize it."

I stared at her, profound awe washing over me. "You want to go to the feds ourselves."

"We go to the District Attorney," Elena confirmed, nodding. "We hand them the piece of paper Madison just gave us. We expose the trust ourselves. We tell them Victor committed identity theft against a minor to hide his assets. If we bring it to the light before she does, her blackmail is worthless."

"If we do that, we trigger a massive audit," I warned her. "They will comb through every aspect of your life. They will look at the clinic. They will look at Elias's hospital bills. It will be weeks of invasive legal hell."

"I have nothing to hide," Elena said, her chin lifting defiantly. "Do you?"

I looked into her eyes. For the first time in my life, my closets were empty of skeletons. I had paid my restitution. I had sold the corrupt divisions. I was clean.

May you like

"No," I said. "I don't."

Elena smiled, a dangerous, brilliant expression. "Then let's show Madison what happens when you try to blackmail people who aren't afraid of the light."
