Chapter 3 - The True Bloodline

My mother spun around just as the heavy oak front door of our apartment was blown entirely off its hinges.
The apartment flooded with men in black tactical suits. They moved with absolute, silent precision, disarming the fake doctor in three seconds flat, driving him to his knees on the glass-covered rug.
Then, the shadows in the hallway parted.
Dominic Vance stepped into the bedroom.
He was a terrifying force of nature, the undisputed king of Chicago’s financial and criminal underworld. Dominic wore a flawless bespoke suit, but his dark, calculating eyes radiated a lethal, demonic fury.
My mother stumbled backward, her face turning the color of wet ash. "Mr. Vance? What... what is the meaning of this? This is a private residence!"
Dominic ignored her completely. He walked straight past my mother, stopping at the edge of the bed. His imposing, terrifying presence softened for exactly one second as he looked down at Lily.
"I told you the civilian world was too dangerous for you, piccola," Dominic murmured softly.
Lily let out a broken sob, reaching for him. "Papa, she tried to take the baby."
My brain short-circuited. Papa.

The woman I had married, the quiet, gentle girl I thought was an orphan who worked at a library, was the sole heir to the Vance empire.
Dominic’s jaw locked. The coldness that returned to his eyes was enough to freeze the blood in my veins. He slowly turned his head to look at my mother.
