Chapter 5 - The Blue Dress

Two weeks later, our home was quiet again.
We had the locks changed, installed a state-of-the-art security system with eight exterior cameras, and placed all our property and assets into an irrevocable family trust with Amy as the sole trustee.
Teresa’s trial was brief. Faced with Mason’s detailed testimony, bank surveillance footage of her opening fraudulent cards, and the forged deed in her handwriting, she accepted a plea agreement.
She was sentenced to seven years in a state correctional facility, with five years of supervised probation and an order for full financial restitution.
Mason lost his legal certification and received three years of community supervision and five hundred hours of community service.
The extended family vanished from our lives, exactly as they should have years ago.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the sun poured through our kitchen windows, illuminating the freshly painted walls and clean oak floors.
Frederick was crawling across the living room rug, giggling as he chased a soft toy truck, completely healthy and full of energy.
Amy walked out of our bedroom.
She was wearing the pale blue dress.
The silk fabric caught the afternoon light, hugging her shoulders softly and bringing out the bright color in her eyes. Around her neck hung the delicate gold chain with the letter “F”.
She looked radiant.
She looked peaceful.
She looked like the woman I had fallen in love with six years ago under the summer stars.
I walked over, wrapped my arms around her waist, and pulled her close.
“Happy birthday, Frederick,” I smiled, kissing the top of my son’s head as he grabbed my pant leg, then looking up into Amy’s eyes.
Amy smiled, resting her hands against my chest. There were no shadows in her eyes anymore. No fear. No hesitation.
“Thank you, Connor,” she whispered softly.
“For what?”
“For showing me what a real husband looks like.”
I kissed her forehead, then her lips.
May you like
“In this house,” I said, looking around our quiet, sunlit home, “there is only love, respect, and the family we chose.”
And for the first time in our lives, our home finally belonged to us.
