Chapter 2 - The Card That Was Never Hers

“Those two suitcases look like they came straight out of a dumpster. Get them out of here before they contaminate my luggage.”

Betsy’s words landed like a s:lap in the most exclusive cabin in Pinecrest Lake. In front of her, Walter and Nancy stood frozen, still wearing the simple clothes they had traveled in from a small town. One of their old suitcases had just rolled against the wall after Betsy kic:ked it with the tip of her shoe.

Naomi felt her face burning. She had organized the vacation to bring both families together, paying for a lakefront house, a private chef, and transportation for five days. She wanted to thank her parents for everything they had done for her when she started her medical products company with a borrowed table and a used computer.

Her mother-in-law, however, had spent years believing that everything came from her son Lucas.

“Mom, enough,” he said, stepping toward her.

Betsy didn’t even look at him.

“I’m not going to share a roof with people who don’t know how to behave in places like this. Naomi, take your parents and find a cheap inn. There’s no room for them here.”

Nancy lowered her head. Walter picked up the suitcase without protesting, but his hands were trembling.

“We don’t want to cause any trouble,” he murmured. “We can go home today.”

That humility finally broke something inside Lucas.

“They didn’t cause any trouble. You did,” he replied with a firmness no one had ever heard from him. “Naomi paid for this house. The trip, the food, and even the car you brought were all paid for with my wife’s hard work.”

Pamela, Lucas’s sister, stopped recording videos for her social media and let out an incredulous laugh.

“Now you’re going to humiliate your own mother just to defend those people?”

Lucas stepped in front of both women.

“Those people are my family. And they have more manners than the two of you put together.”

Betsy, certain that her son would eventually give in, lifted her chin.

“Then all of you can leave. Pamela and I are staying. We’ll enjoy the house without peasants ruining our pictures.”

Naomi looked at Lucas. He understood without a word.

“Fine,” he said. “Enjoy it while you can.”

Lucas picked up his in-laws’ suitcases and walked toward the door. Before leaving, Naomi approached the property manager and spoke quietly to him. Then she smiled with a calmness that made Pamela nervous.

An hour later, as the car descended the highway, Naomi had already booked four flights to Key West and a private oceanfront villa. Walter and Nancy still believed they were going home.

But Naomi made one more call.

“I’m the person who made the reservation,” she said. “Cancel every service and remove the two women who stayed behind from the property. I don’t care if there’s no refund.”

Lucas, sitting beside her, used his phone to block the additional card his mother used to finance her luxuries.

Back at the cabin, Betsy was toasting with champagne and saying that she had finally put everyone in their place.

Then someone knocked on the door.

When Pamela opened it, she found the manager standing there with two security guards.

Neither of them could imagine what was about to come to light…
