Chapter 2 - The Five Words

The scene in the living room was a picture of stolen domestic bliss. Daniel was pouring champagne. His mother, Eleanor, was sitting on the sofa, laughing loudly. And Brooke, the mistress, was standing by the fireplace in her red silk slip dress, clinging to Daniel’s arm as if she had lived there her entire life.

When the door clicked shut behind Thomas and Natalie, the laughter died instantly.

"What the hell is this?" Daniel snapped, setting the champagne bottle down. His smugness quickly returned as he sneered at Natalie. "I thought I made myself clear. You don't live here anymore. And Thomas, you have no right to barge in here."

"Actually," Brooke chimed in, leaning into Daniel with a sickly sweet smile, "we're having a private family Christmas. You need to leave."

The confrontation that followed was perfectly captured in. Thomas did not raise his voice. He stepped forward, his dark suit a stark contrast to the festive room. Natalie stood just behind him, wrapped in her cream sweater, watching the man she loved wrap his arm around the woman in red.

Thomas raised his hand, pointing a single, steady finger directly at Daniel's chest. The room went dead silent.

Then, Thomas spoke just five words.

"I own this house, Daniel."
