Chapter 9: The Space Between Words

Chapter 9: The Space Between Words

That night, after Toby had safely fallen asleep under the watchful, double-checked safety of his bedroom, David and Clara sat on the back porch listening to the steady rhythm of the rain.

"Why didn't you pack your bags?" David asked quietly, staring out into the dark yard. "After the things I said to you at the hospital, most people would have walked away and never looked back."

Clara stared down at her hands, a soft, thoughtful expression on her face. "Because I knew the man screaming at me wasn't you. It was a terrified father trying to fight an enemy he couldn't see. If I left, the story would have ended with bitterness and guilt. I wanted to stay for the ending where we heal."

David turned to look at her, the porch light catching the sharp lines of his jaw, his expression softening completely. "You have a remarkable heart, Clara."

"It's just a heart that knows how easily things can break," she replied softly, looking up to meet his gaze.
