Chapter 10 - The Vows We KeepThe storm broke, leaving the city washed clean.

With Marcus Sterling in federal custody and the banking records exposed, the DA immediately dropped the fabricated indictment against Elena. Victor's final, desperate attempt to destroy us from his prison cell had backfired spectacularly, earning him an additional ten years on his sentence for conspiracy.

It was a quiet Saturday evening. The townhouse was filled with the smell of roasted garlic and the sound of soft jazz playing on the stereo.

Sofia was asleep upstairs.

Elena and I were on the back patio. The string lights glowed warmly above us, casting a golden hue over the wooden deck. I poured two glasses of red wine and handed her one.

She took a sip, looking out at the dark, calm waters of Lake Michigan.

"It's finally over," Elena said softly, resting her head against my shoulder.

"Yes," I agreed, wrapping my arm securely around her waist. "It is."

I looked down at the woman who had saved my life. She hadn't saved me from a physical threat; she had saved me from myself. She had forced me to evolve, to realize that true power was not the ability to destroy, but the discipline to protect without losing your humanity.

I set my wine glass down on the small table.

I took a deep breath, my heart beating with a nervous, beautiful energy I hadn't felt since I was a young man.

I stepped back, turning to face her, and slowly dropped to one knee.

Elena gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, her eyes widening in shock.

I reached into my jacket pocket and pulled out a small velvet box. I opened it. Inside was not a massive, ostentatious diamond meant to show off wealth. It was a beautiful, vintage sapphire surrounded by small diamonds—elegant, timeless, and perfectly her.

"Three years ago, on this patio, I told you I would earn the right to build something new with you," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "I promised I would do it slowly. Honestly. On your terms."

Tears spilled over Elena’s eyelashes, tracking silently down her cheeks.

"You didn't just ask me to be a better man," I continued, looking up into the eyes of the only person who truly knew my soul. "You demanded it. You refused to let me hide in the dark. You gave me the greatest gift of my life—our daughter—and you taught me that love is not about control. It’s about choice."

I took a shaky breath.

"Elena, I don't want to be your ex-husband anymore. I don't want to be just your partner. I want to be the man who stands beside you in the light for the rest of our lives. Will you marry me? Again?"

Elena let out a wet, beautiful laugh. She didn't hesitate. She dropped to her knees right there on the wooden deck, throwing her arms around my neck, knocking me backward slightly.

"Yes," she sobbed into my shoulder. "Yes, a thousand times, yes."

I wrapped my arms around her, burying my face in her hair, breathing in the scent of vanilla and rain. I slid the sapphire ring onto her finger, sealing a promise that had been forged in the absolute hardest fires of our lives.

We stayed on the floor of the patio for a long time, holding each other under the string lights.

I had spent my entire life believing that building an empire meant acquiring more buildings, more money, and more fear.

But as I held the woman I loved, knowing our daughter was sleeping safely just a few feet away, I finally understood the truth.

I didn't need to conquer the world. I was already holding it in my arms.
