Chapter 3 - The Empire Madison Was Building

By sunrise, my penthouse was surrounded by quiet security.

No flashing lights.

No chaos.

No men drawing attention.

I had learned long ago that the most dangerous moments were often the quietest ones.

Jonas met me in the private elevator.

“She is in your office,” he said.

“Alone?”

“Yes.”

“Any weapons?”

“No.”

“What is she doing?”

“Searching.”

The elevator doors opened.

My apartment was spotless, expensive, and cold.

Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked Lake Michigan. Sculptures sat beneath museum lighting. Every surface was polished. Every detail had been chosen by professionals.

Elena used to complain that the place looked like a hotel.

She was right.

It had never felt like home.

The office door was half-open.

Madison stood behind my desk with drawers pulled out around her. Papers were scattered across the floor. Her designer coat was thrown over a chair.

When she saw me, she froze.

Then she smiled.

“Dante. You scared me.”

I closed the door behind me.

“Did I?”

She looked toward Jonas.

“Can you give us privacy?”

“No,” I said.

Her smile faded.

“You are angry because of Elena.”

“I am angry because you lied.”

Madison’s eyes flickered.

“I do not know what you think I lied about.”

I placed Elena’s note on the desk.

Madison stared at it.

For one second, her face went completely blank.

Then she laughed.

“She wrote that? Dante, she is desperate. She wants you back.”

“You went to see her.”

“She came to see me.”

“You told her I wanted her gone.”

“She already believed that.”

The words cut deeper than Madison understood.

Because there was truth in them.

I had made Elena feel unwanted long before Madison appeared.

But that did not erase Madison’s betrayal.

“You intercepted messages,” I said. “You lied about her pregnancy. You made her afraid of me.”

Madison’s expression hardened.

“I protected what we had.”

“We had nothing.”

Her eyes widened.

“Nothing?”

“You were a distraction.”

The cruelty in my voice surprised even me.

But I did not take it back.

Madison’s face twisted.

“You loved her after everything she did?”

“Elena did not do this. You did.”

Madison stepped closer.

“She left you. She walked away. I was there when you were broken.”

“You were there because you wanted access.”

Her eyes flashed.

“Access to what?”

I pulled the flash drive from my pocket and placed it on the desk.

The color drained from her face.

“There it is,” I said.

She reached for it.

Jonas moved before she could touch it.

Madison pulled back.

“Dante, listen to me.”

“No. You listen.”

I leaned forward.

“You knew where Elena was. You knew she was pregnant. You kept her isolated. And you came into my life pretending you cared about me.”

Madison’s eyes filled with tears.

For a moment, she looked almost convincing.

Then I remembered Elena in that hospital bed.

Alone.

Terrified.

Carrying my daughter without support.

“You thought I would never find out,” I said.

Madison stopped pretending.

Her tears vanished.

“Yes,” she said quietly. “I did.”

Jonas shifted beside me.

Madison continued, “Because you never look closely at the people you think are beneath you. You look at numbers. Deals. Enemies. You do not see women until they are standing in front of you crying.”

Her words landed harder than I expected.

She was wrong about many things.

But not that.

“You wanted my company,” I said.

“I wanted a life you promised without realizing it.”

“I promised you nothing.”

“You promised it every time you let me sit beside you in meetings. Every time you introduced me as if I mattered. Every time you let me think I could become more than your secret.”

I looked at the flash drive.

“What is on this?”

Madison said nothing.

Jonas connected it to a secured laptop.

The files opened slowly.

At first, they looked like ordinary financial documents.

Then the names appeared.

My shipping company.

My real estate holdings.

Offshore accounts.

Private investors.

There were transfer records, copied contracts, internal emails, and files linked to one of my oldest business partners: Victor Hale.

Victor was supposed to be loyal.

He had worked beside me for fifteen years.

But the documents revealed that he and Madison had been moving money out of several companies through shell corporations.

Not enough to immediately expose the theft.

But enough to create a financial crisis if the right deals collapsed.

Then we found the final folder.

It was titled:

MORETTI EXIT PLAN.

Inside was a document describing a coordinated attempt to destroy my reputation, force a liquidity crisis, and pressure me into selling key assets at a fraction of their value.

Madison had not wanted to become my wife.

She wanted to destroy me, then own the pieces.

And Elena’s pregnancy was a problem.

Because a child gave me something Madison could not control.

A reason to change.

A reason to look beyond myself.

“You were working with Victor,” I said.

Madison looked away.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor said you were vulnerable after the divorce. He said you were lonely. He said you would never suspect a woman you let into your bed.”

The room went silent.

For years, people feared my name.

But my greatest weakness had never been an enemy outside my circle.

It had been the people I allowed close enough to lie.

My phone rang.

Jonas answered, listened, then handed it to me.

“It is the hospital,” he said.

I took the call.

A nurse spoke quickly.

“Mr. Moretti, Ms. Ashford is asking for you. The baby’s condition has changed.”

Every thought inside me disappeared.

I looked at Madison one last time.

“You will speak to investigators,” I said. “And you will tell them everything.”

Then I walked out.

May you like

Because my empire could wait.

My daughter could not.
