Chapter 3 - A Decade of Disrespect

The first real warning sign came during our third Thanksgiving as a married couple.
I had spent two entire days preparing a massive, elaborate meal for his family. Rebecca tasted the turkey, smirked, and looked at her mother. “It’s adorable how hard you try to impress us, Laura.”
Carol laughed quietly, sipping her wine.
I waited for Michael to defend me. I waited for him to tell his sister to show some respect in our home. Instead, he simply cleared his throat and changed the subject to football.
That became the blueprint of our marriage. Rebecca insulted me. Carol encouraged her. Michael avoided confrontation at all costs. And I just kept forgiving him, hoping my generosity would eventually buy their love.
When our son Ethan was born, Carol boldly informed me that his middle name should be chosen exclusively by Michael’s family because “the Dawson name mattered more.” When I objected, stating that I was the one who had carried him for nine months, Rebecca called me controlling and manipulative.
Michael had pulled me aside and told me that everyone was just "emotional" and asked me to compromise.
Years passed. Their behavior became increasingly worse because there were never any consequences. I was their personal bank, their punching bag, and their servant, all wrapped into one.

Until our anniversary dinner.
That night, Rebecca didn’t simply slap me. She finally made me understand the reality of my existence. I had spent twelve years financing people who didn’t respect me, while fiercely protecting a husband who never, ever protected me.
