Chapter 5 - The Weight of My Shoulders

The collapse of the Parker family’s illusion of success was swift, brutal, and entirely of their own making.
Without the invisible safety net of my monthly deposits, Diane’s restaurant defaulted on its mortgage within sixty days. The bank foreclosed on the property, forcing them to liquidate their remaining assets just to cover the massive debt they had secretly accrued. Kimberly, unable to float the costs of her catering business without my corporate credit line, was forced to shut down her operations and declare personal bankruptcy after defaulting on her contracts.
Eric found himself completely buried. He moved into a small apartment, suddenly saddled with the overwhelming financial and emotional burden of supporting a mother and sister who had never learned how to actually fend for themselves. He had chosen his family at that anniversary dinner, and now he was drowning with them.
I didn't stick around to watch the wreckage.
My interior design business, unburdened by the constant financial drain of my in-laws, exploded into a new era of massive corporate success. I returned to my beautiful home, redecorated the dining room, and filled the house with peace, laughter, and light. Madison and Mason thrived in a calm environment, free from the toxic, underlying tension that had poisoned their early childhood.
Kimberly had thought that violent slap would humiliate me. She thought it would put me in my place and remind me that I was nothing more than a subservient outsider who existed only to cater to their needs.

She was right. The slap did remind me of my place.
It reminded me that my place was never beneath her, beneath her bitter mother, or beside a husband who was too weak and cowardly to defend me. I was a queen who had willingly acted as a servant out of love. And once I finally decided to walk away, the Parkers discovered the horrifying, undeniable truth: their entire comfortable, arrogant life had only ever been standing on my shoulders.
