Chapter 12: The Silk Noose

For three days, the shadow of Silas Vane hung over the West Side like a suffocating shroud.
Noah didn't hand over the ledgers. Instead, he moved them to a secure, heavily guarded safe house. He doubled the security at Moretti Logistics and placed three of his best men outside Bellini Bespoke. He was preparing for a street war.
But Silas Vane was not Dante Russo. Silas didn't fight with guns and arson. He fought with paper, perception, and precision.
It happened on a Friday afternoon.
Lyra was in the cutting room, pinning a gorgeous emerald silk gown for the District Attorney’s wife. The shop was quiet, filled only with the hum of the sewing machines and the soft jazz playing from the vintage radio.
Suddenly, a fleet of black SUVs aggressively jumped the curb outside the shop.
Lyra looked up through the front window. The doors of the vehicles flew open, and a dozen men wearing navy blue windbreakers poured out. Across the backs of the jackets, bold yellow letters spelled out a nightmare: F.B.I.
The front door of Bellini Bespoke was thrown open with such force the glass fractured.
“FBI! Nobody move! Keep your hands where we can see them!” the lead agent shouted, sweeping into the room with his weapon drawn.
The apprentices screamed. Maya dropped her fabric shears, her hands shooting into the air.
Lyra did not scream. Her heart slammed against her ribs, but she forced her spine to straighten. She stepped out from behind the cutting table, placing herself between the armed agents and her terrified staff.
“Lower your weapons,” Lyra commanded, her voice ringing with the absolute authority of a woman who refused to be a victim. “There are no threats in this room. This is a legitimate business. What is the meaning of this?”
The lead agent, a hardened man with a cynical sneer, holstered his weapon but signaled his team to begin tearing the shop apart. They ripped bolts of silk off the shelves, overturned the mannequins, and shattered the antique mirrors.
“We have a federal warrant, Mrs. Moretti,” the agent said, stepping into Lyra’s personal space. “For this property, and for Moretti Logistics.”
“On what grounds?” Lyra demanded, her hands balling into fists as she watched a federal agent smash her father’s scorched pattern cabinet.
“Narcotics trafficking and conspiracy,” the agent replied smoothly. “An anonymous tip led us to Warehouse 7 at the docks an hour ago. We found three hundred kilos of uncut heroin packed inside crates labeled 'Textile Imports,' specifically manifested for Bellini Bespoke.”
Lyra felt the blood drain from her face. Warehouse 7. That was the overflow warehouse she used for importing bulk European fabrics.
“That’s impossible,” Lyra whispered. “My husband and I run clean operations. Someone planted that.”
“Save it for the judge,” the agent mocked. He pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. “Lyra Moretti, you are under arrest for federal drug trafficking.”
Before he could reach for her wrist, a deafening roar echoed from the street.
Noah’s black sedan skidded to a halt sideways in the middle of the road, blocking traffic. Noah erupted from the driver’s seat. He didn't look like a CEO. He looked like the devil incarnate. He burst through the broken door of the shop, his eyes blazing with a violence so raw it made the federal agents instinctively step back and draw their weapons again.
“Get your hands off my wife!” Noah roared, moving toward the lead agent with lethal intent.
“Noah, stop!” Lyra screamed, throwing herself in front of him, pressing her hands flat against his chest. She could feel his heart hammering wildly, a caged beast desperate to break out. “If you touch a federal agent, they will shoot you. They will take you away forever. Stop!”
Noah froze, his chest heaving, his dark eyes locked onto Lyra’s terrified face. The sight of her distress was the only thing capable of tethering him to reality.
He looked over Lyra’s shoulder at the lead agent. “She has nothing to do with the shipping manifests. I own Moretti Logistics. I am the sole signatory on the import docks. If you want an arrest, you take me.”
“Noah, no!” Lyra gasped, gripping his lapels.
“Both of your names are on the corporate lease, Mr. Moretti,” the agent smirked. “I can take both of you.”
Noah leaned in, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly whisper. “If you put handcuffs on my wife, I will personally ensure that every dark secret the FBI has buried in this city over the last twenty years is published on the front page of the Times tomorrow morning. You know exactly what I possess. You take me. She stays.”
The agent hesitated. The rumors of the Moretti ledgers had already begun circulating through the corrupt veins of the city’s elite. He weighed the threat.
“Fine,” the agent spat. “Just you.”
Noah turned to Lyra. He gently pulled her hands off his chest and kissed her forehead. It wasn't a kiss of surrender; it was a promise of war.
“Call Owen,” Noah whispered against her skin. “Tell him to lock down the accounts. Do not trust anyone but Paulie. I will handle this from the inside. Silas is trying to break us. Don't let him.”
“I won't,” Lyra swore, tears finally burning her eyes.
She watched as the federal agents slapped handcuffs onto Noah’s wrists, parading him out of the shop and shoving him into the back of a black SUV.

As the sirens wailed and the vehicles sped away, leaving Lyra standing in the wreckage of her beautiful shop, a slow, freezing anger replaced her fear. Silas Vane thought he had removed the king from the board.
He had completely forgotten about the queen.
