Chapter 3 - The Woman Behind the Smile

Ryan’s new girlfriend was named Vanessa Hale.

The name struck Alessandro first.

Marco saw the reaction immediately.

“Hale?” Ella asked. “Is that bad?”

Alessandro’s face became unreadable.

“Vanessa is the daughter of Victor Hale.”

Ella looked between them.

“And Victor Hale is?”

“A man who wants to destroy me,” Alessandro said.

The truth unfolded slowly.

Victor Hale had once been Alessandro’s closest ally. Together, they had controlled shipping routes, real-estate deals, and a network of criminal operations stretching from New York to Miami.

But Victor had become reckless.

He wanted more territory. More power. More bodies in the streets.

Alessandro had refused.

Their alliance became a war.

Vanessa had begun dating Ryan months earlier, long before Ella discovered the affair. Ryan thought he had met an ambitious woman with wealthy connections. He did not know Vanessa had been collecting information about Ella’s life.

Her apartment.

Her job.

Her schedule.

Her emotional weakness after the divorce.

“She wanted to use me to get to you,” Ella whispered.

“Yes,” Alessandro said.

“And Ryan?”

“Ryan may not understand the full situation,” Marco said. “But he gave her access.”

Ella sat down hard.

For months, Ryan had made her feel insignificant.

Now she learned he had handed her life to dangerous strangers simply because he wanted to impress someone new.

Alessandro crouched in front of her.

“Ella, look at me.”

She did.

“This is not your fault.”

“It always feels like it is.”

His expression tightened.

“That is what men like Ryan do. They hurt you, then make you believe your pain is proof you deserved it.”

Ella’s breath caught.

No one had ever said it that clearly before.

The next day, Alessandro gave Ella a choice.

She could leave New York with a new identity, protected by money and distance.

Or she could remain under his protection while he ended Victor Hale’s threat.

Ella wanted to leave.

She wanted to take a bus to somewhere quiet, find a cheap apartment, and rebuild a life where no one knew her name.

But then she received a voicemail from Ryan.

“Ella, please call me. Vanessa is gone. I think she’s dangerous. I didn’t know what she was involved in.”

She deleted the message.

Then another arrived.

This one contained crying.

Ryan’s voice shook.

“She took my sister, Ella. She said I have to get you to meet her.”

Ella went pale.

Ryan’s younger sister, Mia, was only nineteen. She had always been kind to Ella, even when Ryan was not.

“She kidnapped her,” Ella said.

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“It is bait.”

“I know.”

“You cannot go.”

“But Mia is innocent.”

“So are you.”

Ella looked at him.

“You have people. Cars. Weapons. Influence.”

“Yes.”

“Then use it to save her.”

Alessandro held her gaze for a long time.

He was used to fear. Used to obedience. Used to people begging him to solve their problems.

But Ella was not asking him to protect her because she was helpless.

She was demanding that he protect someone else.

Finally, he nodded.

“We will save Mia.”

The exchange took place at an abandoned riverside warehouse after midnight.

Ella sat in the back seat of Alessandro’s SUV, listening to Marco argue through an earpiece.

“You should stay here,” Alessandro told her.

“No.”

“Ella.”

“Vanessa wants me. If she sees I am not there, Mia could die.”

Alessandro’s eyes darkened.

“I will not use you as bait.”

“I am not bait,” Ella said. “I am part of the decision.”

The words stopped him.

Then, reluctantly, he handed her a small earpiece.

“Stay behind Marco. If I tell you to run, you run.”

“I will.”

“You promise?”

Ella looked at him.

“No. But I will try.”

For the first time, Alessandro smiled despite the danger.

Inside the warehouse, Vanessa stood beside Mia with a gun pressed against her shoulder.

Ryan was tied to a chair nearby, bleeding from the mouth.

“Ella!” he shouted. “Don’t come closer!”

Vanessa smiled.

“You always did make people want to save you.”

Ella walked forward.

“You don’t know me.”

Vanessa laughed.

“I know enough. You were sad. Lonely. Easy to manipulate.”

Ella looked at Ryan.

Then at Vanessa.

“No,” Ella said. “I was hurt. There is a difference.”

Vanessa’s smile faded.

Alessandro stepped from the shadows.

Every man in the warehouse raised a weapon.

Vanessa looked at him with hatred.

“You chose her over everything.”

Alessandro’s voice was cold.

“I chose not to become my father.”

Gunfire erupted.

Marco pulled Ella behind a steel support beam. Alessandro’s men moved through the darkness. Vanessa dragged Mia toward a side exit.

Ella saw her chance.

She grabbed a fire extinguisher from the wall, ran forward, and sprayed it directly into Vanessa’s face.

Vanessa screamed.

Mia broke free.

Marco caught her.

Seconds later, Vanessa was surrounded.

Alessandro approached her slowly.

Vanessa raised her gun toward him.

Then she looked at Ella.

“You think
